THE APPARITION OF FÁTIMA
A APARIÇÃO DE FÁTIMA
In May of this year, on Ascension Thursday, three children were pasturing their flock at Fátima, council of Vila Nova de Ourem: Lucia, aged 10, Francisco, 9, and Jacinta, 7.
On one occasion when these children were praying the rosary, a vision appeared to them which, speaking to them, declared that it was Our Lady and that it would appear to them monthly, on the 13th, for six months. This fact gradually became known to the people and drew a great number of persons to Fátima, those who went there on 13 September last rising to more than 20 thousand, many of whom saw nothing to astonish them, noting only that the sun darkened a little and the air grew cooler.
On the 13th of this month, which was the last apparition, more than 50 thousand people flocked there, many going in coaches, automobiles, carts, on bicycles, etc., and a great many on foot, braving even the rain that fell persistently and drenched everyone.
The Diario de Noticias of Lisbon, in a dispatch from Vila Nova de Ourem, tells the strange event thus:
O Diario de Noticias, de Lisboa, numa correspondencia de Vila Nova de Ourem, conta assim o estranho facto:
“The anxiety for the hour of the colloquy, [...] the protection of the Virgin.”
The children got up smiling and explained to their anxious listeners that the Lady had told them that peace would come soon and that the return of our brave soldiers, who are fighting heroically in France, would not be long delayed.
A special correspondent of the Seculo, who went to Fátima expressly, also describes the sensational event in the following terms:
“The rain falls incessantly, but no one despairs. [...] flocked to the now celebrated heath.”
“A chuva cai incessantemente mas ninguem desespera. [...] acorreram á já agora celebrada charneca.”
