My dear friend.
Meu caro amigo.
If it is easy for you to frame the questions in your kind letter, it is very, very difficult for me to give a complete and precise answer setting out everything I witnessed and saw.
The many and varied feelings I went through on that unforgettable day are not easily explained; only those who went through them can feel them, and even they can never reproduce them fully and truly.
I was among the first to arrive there, and among the last to withdraw. I never felt so great a joy and never so pure a satisfaction of soul. From the beginning, and in spite of the continual and troublesome rain, I noticed at once that all of us, in a communion of feelings and ideas, were contented and hopeful; not a gesture of despair or faintness, not a word of displeasure or impropriety. I am certain, my dear friend, that it could have rained or been the worst possible weather and nobody would have budged from there; and in spite of the crowd you saw, it seemed as though we already knew one another, that we were friends and that we all wished for the well-being of the others. Next to me and under our umbrella various people passed, sheltering and talking as if we had known one another for a long time and were old friends.
Among them appeared an old fellow (the father of Joaquim of Maceira) [1v] a good 70 years old, who had already walked five leagues* and had to walk them all again. I asked whether he was worn out by the journey and the rain, but I could get no other answer from the friendly, likeable old man than “He who could, gave the orders”, and it seems to me that his “He who can, commands”* summed up the attitude of almost all of us who were there; hence our stoicism and perseverance.
For that reason, and in spite of everything, we were expecting something, though some, and I one of them, were anxious and, to tell the truth, somewhat afraid that nothing would happen.
Not everyone has the deep faith of true believers. I will tell you more, my friend: my companion, Joaquim Sacristão of “Turquel”, had in his hand a watch set to sun time*, and we watched the time pass with some unease.
Now, my friend, let whoever can describe it; I cannot. It must have been between 12.35 and 12.40 by my friend's trusty watch when I saw with complete clarity — for the sunlight let us look at the sun as much as we liked — the sun and the clouds around it tremble hesitantly, like someone obeying a higher will and force that had at that moment laid hold of it and was compelling it to obey. It gave me the impression of someone being given a shake and made to listen. Have no doubt that there was a solar phenomenon on that occasion, with a greater or lesser display of various colours; I saw only a very [2] pronounced yellow, and I thought I saw a black colour beneath the solar disc, but this I cannot vouch for.
More I cannot explain to you, though I felt it and still feel it today, so much so that I shall never again spend such pleasant moments.
Did you not notice our joy and satisfaction after the event? We all asked one another, and only one single person told me they had not seen it. Because of what happened before: the good behaviour of so many people, the prayers, the hymns, everyone's confidence, the faith that showed
in their faces, the solar phenomenon that took place, the joy, the friendship that united us all in those moments and even during our stay there, the reverence of the kneeling and fervent crowd, the tears of inner contentment, the fact that there was not the slightest quarrel, theft or accident — because of all this, my friend, and above all because of the solar phenomenon I saw, I believe that there was at Fátima on 13 September 1917 so extraordinary an event that, until science explains it to me, it is solely and exclusively the work of God.

P.S. I saw the children arrive and leave, and went as far as their house, which my family went into.
I did not go in, nor do I approve of all the silly and tire-[2v]some questions that the many people who constantly sought them out, and still do, put to the poor children.
Otherwise, just some poor peasant girls, awkward in their new clothes and crowns of flowers.
