[1]13 January 1918

[1]13 de Janeiro de 1918

Today it is exactly 3 months since the miracle of Fátima, which I had the great happiness of witnessing. The morning of that happy day could not have looked worse for someone who, like me, had suffered from intermittent fevers for 13 years (in recent years they had turned into chronic malaria), for it dawned very rainy. Damp did me dreadful harm; I did not even need to go out to feel its effects. The rain was so relentless that I got completely soaked: at 10h at night, when I went to bed, my clothes were still soaking wet on me. I did not at all expect to be cured there, not because I did not believe in the power of God, but because I had formed no idea of what was going to happen, although I believed there would be something supernatural. While the great miracle was taking place, I asked for nothing for myself. When my mother learned of this, she said to me: "Someone asked for you; it was I" — What did you ask for? — "One of the requests was your health". Only then did I notice that since the 13th, two days earlier, I had not felt a pain in the spleen that I always had, caused by the [1v] malaria. It was not usually strong, so I did not notice at once that it had gone, but in its acute state it troubled me a great deal.

One of the doctors who saw me even spoke of an operation, an idea that was rejected by the attending physician, who declared that it would not cure me and considered my illness incurable, which he

stated to me once again on 6 July 1917, adding that I should resign myself to living like this, although the acute attacks I suffered from would probably ease at times. This doctor did not see me again until 8 December; he knew nothing of my going to Fátima, and declared to me, to his great astonishment, that he found nothing wrong with me. This is one of the graces granted to me by Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary on that blessed day. And I say nothing about the miracle itself, for that has already been very well described. I only add that I have felt a different person since that happy moment, and I end by praying to the Queen of the Most Holy Rosary that the Church may give its decision on so marvellous an event.
