[1] My dear little Lúcia

[1] Minha querida Luçiazinha

I hope you have been in good health, as well as your Parents and family.

I have been wanting to write to you for a long time, and if I have not done so it is because every Monday I get news of you from a lady from Aljustrel whom I go and ask about you and your family, the same one who took you the little book.

I am not in Torres Novas now, but spending some time at the house of the Rev. Fr. Dr. Manoel dos Santos Canastreiro2, because his two nieces are my goddaughters. This year I could not go there as [1v] I intended, but God willing I will go next year and spend some time there, as well as at little Jacinta's house, for her Mother also treated me very well and offered me her house, as did her Father.

You may also believe that I shall never forget the favours and kind welcome that your Parents and Brothers and Sisters gave me during the time I was there.

Little Lúcia, I heard in Torres Novas that Our Lady had appeared there to two other Girls; can it be true? Write to me soon and let me know [2] what is happening. And hasn't Our Lady appeared to you again? Or have you had any other vision? If so, I would like to go back there, if another marvellous miracle were to happen like the one I saw on 13 October!!!! However many years I live I shall never forget that blessed day!!!! Such lovely things!!!!!! I consider myself happy to have been near Our Lady; many people doubt, because the war has not ended, but I believe, because the Virgin Mary said that people should do penance; and who has done it? So there you have [2v] the punishments that the Lady told you would come to Portugal: plague, famine and war, isn't that so?

Tell me, are you already getting on well at School? Learn quickly so that you can read the Mass in your little book and say many beautiful Prayers to Our Lady, asking her for me and for all sinners.

Goodbye, my little Friend; remember me warmly to all your family, give your Mother a hug from me, little kisses to little Jacinta, regards to her family, and for you a fond and tender little kiss from your very loving little friend
