Most Excellent Sir
Ex.mo Snr.
I have read with interest and great appreciation the letter Your Excellency has just sent my wife. There is one absolutely essential point in the apparitions of Fatima; once it is verified and proven, the evidence, the reality, of the apparitions of the Virgin of the Rosary will have been demonstrated. It is indeed surprising that this absolutely essential point has not been examined and proven.
It is the manifestation of the column [1v] of smoke, like incense smoke, at the spot at Fatima, moments before the Apparitions of the Virgin to the children, at all six apparitions, on the days and at the hours fixed in advance.
At the October apparition there were many witnesses of the manifestation of smoke.
In my family 4 witnesses or more.
Em minha familia 4 testemunhas ou mais.
I am told that even for the August apparition there are a good many witnesses, and that month the children did not go to [2] Fatima, as is
known. An inquiry among trustworthy and respectable witnesses of the other apparitions is indispensable. For the 1st, only the children can vouch. If it is necessary to spend some money on this rigorous inquiry, the necessary sum is at your orders of Your Excellency.
sabido.
And there should be no delay on this essential point. I believe Your Excellency will have read my article published a short while ago in A Ordem [2v] and in Liberdade.
Why should the Virgin at Fatima, at the gates of Lisbon, refer to the war of slaughter of men in France, in Russia, Italy, etc., and not to the religious war in Portugal*, the country to which Fatima belonged [?]. That is more rational. At most it will be a somewhat obscure point, like others in our religion. As for the return of the Portuguese soldiers, that is a conclusion Lucia drew in her own head, not something the Virgin told her, for She did not go there to hold conversations with the children.
I do not wish to trouble [top margin of fl. 2v] Your Excellency any further, and I sign myself your most devoted and obliged

After Liberdade there was written, in a different hand: (26/X/1917). It seems to be meant to indicate the date of publication of the article in the "Liberdade" to which Dr. Gonçalo de Almeida Garrett refers. The "Liberdade" published an article on Fátima on that date (cf. DCF, vol. 3, 1, Doc. 191, of 26 October 1917), but it is not by Dr. Gonçalo de Almeida Garrett.
