This letter goes as a necessary complement to the preceding one.

Yesterday I had a scientific conference with a Professor of the University of Coimbra, of well-known name, about the manifestation of smoke that occurred at Fatima (similar to the smoke of incense) moments before the apparitions to the three children. I explained how the fact of the smoke occurred, moments [1v] before the predicted apparitions, especially at the last one, which my family and other people attended, who saw the manifestation of the smoke 3 times before that extraordinary apparition of 13 October.
Tive hontem uma conferencia scientifica com um Lente da Universidade de Coimbra, e de nome conhecido, acerca da manifestação de fumo, que se dava em Fatima (similhante ao fumo do insenso) momentos antes das aparições às trez creanças. Expliquei como se deu o facto, do fumo, momentos [1v] antes das aparições predittas, principalmente na ultima, a que assistiu minha familia e mais pessoas, que viram a manifestação do fumo por 3 vezes, antes d’essa aparição extraordinaria de 13 de outubro.
I am referring to the Professor of Mathematics at Coimbra, Dr. Francisco Miranda da Costa Lobo, an intimate friend of mine. He says, and says rightly, that it is not enough to prove, by means of trustworthy witnesses named individually, that the manifestation of smoke, similar to that of incense, occurred at [2] all the apparitions.
Refiro-me ao lente de Mathematica de Coimbra, Dr. Francisco Miranda da Costa Lobo, e meu amigo intimo. Diz elle, e diz bem que não é bastante comprovar que se deu a manifestação do fumo, similhante á do insenso, em [2] todas as aparições, por meio de testemunhas fide dignas, nomeadas individualmente.
Two more inquiries are necessary, substantiated by named trustworthy witnesses.
São necessarios mais dois inqueritos comprovados por testemunhas fide dignas nomeadas.
1st To prove that, before the first apparition in May, at Fatima, at the place of the designated holm oak, the manifestation of smoke was never seen, at any hour of the day, and especially around noon, the hour appointed to the children by the Virgin of the Rosary.
1º Comprovar, que, antes da primeira apparição de maio, em Fatima, no local da azinheira designada, nunca foi vista a manifestação de fumo, a hora nenhuma do dia e principalmente pelo meio dia, hora marcada ás creanças, pela Virgem do Rosario.
2nd To begin straight away an inquiry and examination of what happens with regard to the smoke from now [2v] on at Fatima, at the place of the holm oak and the apparitions, for a good length of time, sending reliable witnesses there, the examination being conscientious, rigorous and daily.
2º Começar desde já um inquerito e exame do que vai occurendo, relativamente ao fumo, d’aqui em [2v] diante, em Fatima, no local da azinheira e aparições, durante bastante tempo, mandando para alli testemunhas de confiança, sendo exame consciencioso, rigoroso e diário.
3rd This inquiry must be even stricter on the coming 13th of September and of October, and for some further month on the 13th itself.
3º Esse inquerito ainda mais apertado deve ser nos dias 13 de setembro e de outubro proximos e mais algum mez no dia 13 mesmo.
The manifestation of this smoke is a geological and meteorological phenomenon.
A manifestação do tal fumo é um phenomeno geologico e methereologico.
Once the manifestations of smoke on the 13th [of] all the months from May to October inclusive of 1917 have been proved, and it has been verified that no manifestation of smoke at all occurred either before or after the period of the apparitions, it is proved that there is the Supernatural and the miracle at Fatima. It is rigorous.
Comprovadas as manifestações de fumo nos dias 13 [dos] mezes todos de maio a outubro inclusive de 1917 e verificado que não se deu manifestação de fumo alguma, nem antes, nem depois do periodo das aparições, fica provado que ha o Sobrenatural e o milagre em Fatima. É rigoroso.
