Most Reverend Sir, held in our highest regard
Revmo Snr da nossa maior consideração
I hardly know how I have remained in your debt for so many days now, without thanking you, truly obliged as I am, for your most kind and captivating letter of 28 September!
Today, in the middle of this blessed month of the Rosary*, is the day set aside for making good all my involuntary arrears and so getting up to date.
May Your Reverence pardon me this failing of mine, for which I do full penance. Your most esteemed [1v] words gave us nothing but pleasure. May they be repeated as often as your labours permit.
I wanted to write so that this letter of mine would arrive on the 13th, a day that will never be swept from our memory because of the apotheosis and grandeur of the event we had the happiness of witnessing at Fatima. Your Reverence shows yourself exceedingly noble to us in wishing to share with us the graces and gifts you are receiving in abundance, and in coming forward in the press to preach for the interests of God and of the Church. So Fatima will not die?
Let us praise for everything the Great Queen of Portugal, Our Lady of the Conception*.
Louvemos por tudo a Grande Rainha de Portugal N. Sra da Conceição.
As the work to which Your Reverence devotes [2] all your effort is a lofty one, I can foretell even now difficulties, which you will go on overcoming as you gain experience in the struggle. May Our Lady give it her special blessing with facts and proofs of a supernatural order.
Since we are naturally very keen to know how the affairs of the Church are going, we hope to applaud Your Reverence's great initiative, and we shall gladly pay close attention to the articles on this great subject as soon as you begin the necessary work of investigation and ratification.
Your Reverence may count on polemics and many thorns. So it must be, if something great and good is to come [2v] out of the Church. Let us go on courageously treading the road to Calvary.
Vamos corajosamente trilhando o caminho do Calvario.
Blessed are the efforts and trials that will give us the opportunity to work in the vineyard of the Lord, who gives the reward in Heaven.
Fatima is a glory for the Mother of God. A Great Harvest. That multitude we saw is truly like a chord of praises that will never die away.
Let us respectfully accept the ultimatum of the Church, which is the infallible teacher in dogmatic matters. Meanwhile let us go on gathering facts and proofs for a sure diagnosis. To Your Reverence falls the difficult role of demonstrating a Divine work.
[3] So believe that we place our feeble prayers at your disposal, and from now on we put everything into the hands of God, and the Most Holy Virgin will crown this great initiative of yours with happy success.
We shall be most eager to follow your talks. Your Reverence will oblige us by sending the newspaper in which you set everything out so clearly and feelingly. And no discouragement!
The hour we are living through is so grave, and the mind so alarmed by the painful uncertainties the future holds for us, that only God can give us comfort. From north to south ra-[3v]ges the terrible epidemic*, which goes on claiming its victims and puts every life at risk.
We could not do without this scourge, since pestilence is the twin sister of famine and war. Thus Providence goes on administering its lesson to the de-Christianised nations.
Assim vae a Providencia ministrando o ensino ás nações deschristianisadas.
The errors and impiety of the peoples had to be atoned for by the very harsh trials we are witnessing. Happily, the dawn of the longed-for peace is taking clearer shape. Although that peace will come to lay a new edifice through a Christian revival with a livelier Faith, it will nonetheless [4] have its foundation cemented with an immense cost in lives and smoking ruins. Heaven knows how many more atrocities, and how great.
In short, nothing happens that God does not permit for good. Here at home everything is still subject to the vicissitudes of Government.
Hands are lacking, or rather there are no well-directed heads who know how to lead towards fruitful action.
We are infected with old vices. The qualities of the Latin race predominate.
Estamos eivados de vicios antigos. Predominam as qualidades da raça latina.
We were great when we made less use of romanticism.
Fomos grandes quando fizemos menos uzo do romantismo.
[4v] We progressed when we were austere observers of the Law. Now... what we see.
[4v] Progredimos quando fomos austeros cumpridores de Lei. Agora... o que se vê.
Atrocities that send shivers down one's spine, disrespect for justice, pardon and leniency towards nameless criminals!
I do not know what will become of us!
Não sei o que será de nós!
Or else the 8th of December* was a shadow, a grace we did not know how to appreciate.
May Our Lady save Portugal.
N. Senra salve Portugal.
And may Your Reverence, who tolerates me so kindly and indulgently and with such magnanimity, forgive me for so much audacity and for this long lecture. I do not forget the “Heroe e Santo”*. I will report when I can.
E V. Rev.cia que tão bondosa e indulgentemente me tolera com tanta magnitude me desculpe por tanta audacia por esta longa sabatina. Não esqueço o "Heroe e Santo". Darei contas quando possa.
Greetings from my mother and myself.
Cumprimentos da minha mãe e meus.
We ask for your prayers. Believe me, Your Reverence's most devoted in Christ
