[1] Most Excellent and Most Reverend Lord Dom José Alves Correia da Silva
Most Worthy Bishop of Leiria
[1] Ex.mo Rv.mo Snr D. José Alves Correia da Silva
Meretissimo Bispo de Leiria
With greetings to Your Most Reverend Excellency, whose sacred ring I kiss, I venture to ask Your Excellency's kind heart for your most high attention to a matter that seems to me worthy of some attention on your part, as a most Glorious Minister of Holy Church and representative of her eternal Truths on earth.
Allow me, Your Excellency, to begin my statement with the following:
Permitta-me V. E. Rv.ma que comece a minha exposição pelo seguinte:
From the extraordinary happenings I witnessed at Fatima on 13 September and 13 October 1917 and 13 June 1920 – exaggerating nothing of what I was allowed to witness, without any effect of suggestion, nor through any exaggeration – I have no doubt whatever that the 6 apparitions of the Most Holy Virgin were a fact. And for that reason, the powerful reason of truth, I am able to affirm and spread my fervent devotion to Our Lady of Fatima. And, wishing to help revive faith and belief in the hearts of the faithful regarding the said apparitions, I had an Image* made, which I offered to be placed inside a small chapel that they built at that place.
The Image is 1 metre high and was made according to the description given by the fortunate seer Lucia. And, to spread the faith further among the people, I also had
some thousands of holy pictures printed, which I distributed [1v] free to the people on 13 May, 13 June and 13 July of this year. I have again had more pictures made from another plate, which I think come out better, adding also a short prayer for Portugal. I showed this prayer to some priests here, and they told me I could have it printed underneath the photogravure, but they forgot to tell me that according to Canon law the Authorisation of the “Imprimatur”* must be requested before printing and not afterwards. Being unaware of this practice of ecclesiastical law, I therefore come most humbly to ask Your Excellency to forgive me for so great a fault, and, if possible, I hope that Your Excellency will grant me the “Imprimatur” for those I have printed in future. I have already begun distributing the said pictures with the prayer at Fatima in exchange for an offering at the discretion of the faithful; these offerings remain in the possession of a simple little woman3 who from the beginning has received all the offerings brought there. I truly believe the good creature has kept everything, awaiting Your Excellency's Orders.
There is also a lady who wishes me to have some leaflets printed with the Meditation of the Holy Rosary in verse, to be sold at Fatima as well, the proceeds going to the same [2] cause. It occurs to me that if Your Excellency also grants the “Imprimatur”, they will then have all the value one could wish. By this same post I am sending the pictures and the said manuscript for the leaflet for Your Excellency's most high appraisal, and I ask for and most humbly accept every correction.
And if Your Excellency would deign to compose a prayer specially for Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima, I shall most gladly have it printed on future pictures. Believe me, Your Excellency, that for anything that may revive the Holy events of Fatima and that is within my reach, despite my feeble strength, I am always ready, and for me it is always a source of glory, for my whole intention is only to help revive the said Holy events of Fatima.
Thanks to the Good God and Our Most Holy Mother, abundant fruit is already being gathered from my said intention of spreading the faith; for, since the faithful have found the beautiful Image at the place,
a great many faithful have always flocked there and devotion to the place has grown much livelier. As the small chapel they built is in a very isolated spot, I fear that the impious may be capable of doing what often seems impossible to us, and so I decided to take it to the house of the most worthy Parish Priest of Fatima, carrying it [2v] every 13th to the place of the apparitions, displaying it for the veneration of the faithful during the day and at night returning with Her to the said Parish Priest's house (the journey is not made in procession). I did not place it in the Church of Fatima because that is being rebuilt and a large part of it is at present without a roof, so nothing would stop the impious from doing their worst. As it really does seem rather conspicuous to be carting the Image “to and fro” every month, I hereby very humbly ask Your Excellency to deign to tell me what I should do on 13 September next. It was my wish to place it permanently, perhaps in September or October, in its little Chapel. It seems to me that Our Lady will not allow them to profane it there any more. In short, I shall most humbly abide by Your Excellency's Venerable Orders. I do not know whether Your Excellency has already been informed of the phenomenal event that took place there on 13 June last. There have also been some cures obtained there through prayers of faith. The Rev. Dr. Formigão, at present a professor at the Seminary in Santarem, has recorded almost all the cases of Fatima; it is this Rev. Dr. who can best inform Your Excellency about everything.
Trusting in Your Excellency's kindness and charity, I hope you will forgive me this long imposition of mine and these rough expressions, for I am a simple layman who from the depths of his soul desires the continuation of Divine protection in the spreading of devotion to the Most Holy Virgin, whom I ask humbly for Her High Protection for Your Excellency and your Diocese.
With nothing further,
Sem mais,
