THE EPISODES OF FATIMA
OS EPISODIOS DE FATIMA

My dear friend,
Meu caro amigo,
It was in the months of July and August some years ago. The large-circulation newspapers, through the pens of their correspondents in Torres Novas and Vila Nova de Ourém, were publishing detailed reports of astonishing events that occurred at Fatima on the 13th of those months. These correspondents, perhaps honest and likeable individuals, but without the scientific qualifications needed to assess those events properly, commented on them ineptly in the light of the prejudices of the liberal and rationalist school, which they had absorbed from the ignorant milieu in which they lived and imperfectly assimilated. They excluded a priori, of course, the existence and even the mere possibility of divine intervention. Every hypothesis, even the most improbable, that attempted to explain in some way the origin and nature of such extraordinary happenings was accepted, provided it dispensed completely with the supernatural. The correspondent of the newspaper “O Seculo”, in the issue of 23 July, after saying that on the 13th of that month in Torres Novas, a town abounding in livery stables, there was not a single carriage to be hired, and that a good many shops even closed, adds that at the place of the apparitions
some thousands of people were gathered, and that a noise like the rumbling of thunder was heard, the children bursting into distressed weeping, making epileptic gestures and then falling into ecstasy; and he concludes by declaring that in his opinion it is a premeditated financial speculation, whose source of revenue lies in the bowels of the hills, in some spring of mineral waters recently discovered by some cunning individual who, under the shelter of religion, wants to turn the serra de Aire into a miraculous resort like old Lourdes. The correspondent of the "Diario de Noticias", if my memory does not fail me, claims to find in suggestion the complete explanation of these facts3.
Meanwhile the news of the apparitions spreads throughout the country with the speed of lightning.
The name of Fatima is pronounced as a sweet hope of blessings and graces by hundreds of thousands of lips from one end of Portugal to the other. The strange happenings in that unknown corner of Estremadura draw to the place, day by day, countless people of all classes and social conditions. The thirst for the supernatural takes hold of a fundamentally Christian people, whom a long and intense propaganda of noxious doctrines had failed to pervert. The spiteful persecution waged for seven years against the faith inherited from their forefathers, far from obliterating religious feeling in them, revived and strengthened it, contrary to the expectation of the enemies of religion, who are at the same time enemies of the Fatherland.
The weight of the misfortunes oppressing the Portuguese forced them, as in all periods of great national calamity, to raise their eyes from the dust of the earth and turn them to heaven, from which alone they expected the remedy for so many and such grave ills. On the other hand, the hypothesis of a hoax deliberately prepared by interested persons was instinctively rejected by the good sense of the sound part of the country's population.
It is not surprising, then, that there was an enormous influx of pilgrims in July and August, when the news of the apparitions had become better known. The municipalities of Leiria, Vila Nova de Ourém and Torres Novas above all were almost emptied of people.
The spectacle of the gathering on the 13th of August was truly moving. Here is how a trustworthy eyewitness describes it.
"After resting a little, I walked slowly to the place of the apparitions. When I got there, many people were praying and singing verses to Our Lady around the bush where the apparitions take place. This bush is a small holm oak that is already reduced to its trunk, so many are the branches that have been taken from it. I spent a few moments chatting with various acquaintances of mine. Many people could already be seen there at that hour.
Some friends of mine, who had meanwhile arrived and come to join me, and I went and sat in the shade of a tree, and there we stayed for quite some time. It was then that a vast crowd began to pour in. Innumerable people were coming from every direction, but it was above all from both sides of the district road that there was a real flood.
Vehicles of all sizes and all shapes followed one another without interruption. People came on foot, on horseback and by bicycle. The sight of the carts scattered over the slope, of the animals grazing in the shade, of the long line of motor cars on the road, of the gigantic heaps of bicycles, made an extremely interesting spectacle. Around astronomical noon*, the exact hour of the apparitions, some thousands of people were crowded together at that place.
I am not versed in the science of calculation, but it seemed to me, and that was the general opinion, that more than five thousand souls were present. They were all anxiously awaiting the arrival of the children, who were already late.
Meanwhile a lad turns up with the sad news that the administrator* of Vila Nova de Ourém, after telling the parents
of the children, whom he had gone to visit, that he would gladly take them in his trap to the place of the apparitions, had wretchedly tricked them, putting the children in the trap and making off with them to Ourém. That is indeed what had happened. That wicked and cowardly man had betrayed all those people. There seems, however, to have been a special intervention of providence in all this, because that spot, through which many people constantly pass, was almost deserted at that hour, the only eyewitnesses being the parish priest of Fatima and some friends who were on the veranda of the parish residence and with whom the administrator had been talking shortly before. When the people learned what had happened, they were deeply indignant. Some friends and I went straight back to the village of Fatima. There we found out in detail how things had happened. A few moments later some men arrived, very happy, saying that Our Lady had appeared. I immediately hurried to the place. The roads were already full of people discussing the astonishing event. I asked each group what they had seen. All with one voice said that they had heard a clap of thunder and seen, near the little holm oak, a flash of lightning and a most beautiful cloud that rose into the air and shortly disappeared. In a word, everyone had gone away satisfied, and from what I heard various people from Vila Nova de Ourém say, the administrator seems to have put his life at great risk by abducting the children. Some educated and level-headed people told me that, although mysterious signs had been observed, there was not sufficient proof of anything supernatural.
Others assured me that they had noticed nothing abnormal.
Others finally proclaimed that, after one had spoken with the children, one could not doubt the reality of the apparitions”.
That is how, in a letter to a friend written at the time, the signatory relates, in broad strokes and with touching simplicity, what happened on the day of the fourth apparition5. From every sentence
of the letter there breathes an unequalled sincerity, all the more to be appreciated since that letter was not intended for publication. I thought I ought to transcribe it so that you might form an approximate idea of the size of the gathering of pilgrims and curious onlookers on the day of the fourth apparition and of the general state of minds in the face of such extraordinary events. I would like to think you will not consider the time you spent reading it wasted.
