The 13th of September was approaching. News of the strange events of the previous month had been carried to every corner of the country by the two giants of information of the capital's periodical press. The population of the villages of the municipality of Villa Nova d'Ourem and of the neighbouring municipalities was the best informed about what had happened, owing to the relative proximity of the place of the apparitions, which allowed many inhabitants of that very vast area to go and witness the already known phenomena without great inconvenience and heavy expense. Countless people who had not gone to Fatima on the other occasions were now resolved to undertake the long and uncomfortable journey, some to satisfy their devotion, others their curiosity. Nevertheless the Catholic press, as a duty of its office, maintained the most prudent reserve in the face of such events, whose true origin was unknown, and only the odd provincial weekly alluded in passing to so delicate and ticklish a subject, to put the faithful on their guard against possible machinations by ill-intentioned men or by the power of darkness.
The children, who proclaimed themselves eyewitnesses of the apparitions and who had been arrested arbitrarily and in bad faith by the administrator* of Villa Nova d'Ourem, had long since been at liberty. That official, having taken them to his house, kept them there for two days, entrusting them to the care of his wife, who treated them with every kindness. During those days he subjected them to repeated and captious interrogations, trying in vain to make them contradict themselves and resorting, also without result, to promises and threats, now to force them to confess that they were acting out a rehearsed comedy, now to wrest from them the secret which, according to what they said, the Apparition had confided to them and which they could reveal to no one. In this way a highly censurable abuse by the administrative authority, which provoked an indignation as deep as it was just in all who learned of it, turned out to be a providential act, which served to strengthen the general conviction, already formed by that time, that the children were not consciously departing from the truth.
Yielding to an irresistible feeling of curiosity, justified by such extraordinary facts, though without managing to overcome entirely the reluctance I felt at doing so, for fear of appearing to give excessive importance to what was perhaps no more than a ridiculous popular superstition, I resolved to set out for Fatima together with some friends, and so on the afternoon of the 12th I took the northern train and got off at Torres Novas, from where at dawn on the following day I went on by carriage to the village that was already so famous. The spectacle I witnessed during the journey from the princess of the Almonda* to the adoptive homeland of Gonçalo Hermingues* was utterly surprising. You will surely not take it amiss if at this point I give the floor to the writer of the letter describing the moving scenes of 13 August, who in another letter to the same addressee narrates the events of 13 September with such precision and such charming simplicity that I cannot resist the wish to transcribe it as well.
It reads as follows. "As last month, this month too I went to Fatima on the 13th, but this time without expecting to, because it was not easy and I had no intention of going there.
É do theor seguinte.
What happened was that on the night of the 12th X arrived here in an enormous char-à-bancs, which was carrying 16 people from Benedicta to Fatima, where they longed to witness the phenomena that had been occurring on the 13th of each month since May of the current year.
X spent the night at my house and the next morning invited me to take a seat in the carriage, an invitation I eagerly accepted.
On the eve, veritable bands of people coming from the direction of the sea had passed through this village, a great number of them having slept here. At the appointed hour we got into the carriage and set off. During the journey I was immensely moved, and more than once tears came to my eyes on seeing the faith and ardent piety of so many thousands of pilgrims. The roads and paths were full of people.
There was no track, however small, that did not bring people to the road. It was a pilgrimage that truly made one weep with emotion. Never in my whole life had it been given to me to witness so great and so touching a manifestation of faith. Nothing was seen or heard that betrayed the slightest feeling of frivolity or even an intention of innocent amusement. The accordion, indispensable at all pilgrimage festivals and village feasts, was conspicuous by its absence. There was not the boisterousness typical of young country folk, nor even the usual harmless jokes and banter, accompanied by strident guffaws. It was almost ten o'clock when we reached the end of our journey. The crowd, which by that hour was already enormous, was approaching the place of the apparitions full of respect. The men uncovered their heads. Almost everyone knelt and prayed fervently. As soon as we arrived, X and I went to the children's house, photographed them and talked with them. That was the scene that impressed me most. I was positively enchanted. That angelic simplicity and that absolute unconcern that they show cannot lie. They do not have the shyness typical of the rough children of the fields and the hills
in the presence of strangers. It is all the same to them whether they speak with one stranger or with many. The answers are always the same. They seem like adults in their manner of expressing themselves. From the children's house we went on to the parish residence, where, besides the parish priest, there were some friends of mine and of X's, with whom we exchanged impressions on the subject of the day. After half an hour we set off for the place of the apparitions.
At noon precisely – astronomical time*, – the sun began to lose its brightness. There was no one who did not notice this fact, which since the previous May had always been repeated on the 13th of each month at the same hour. Shortly afterwards the eldest of the seers told those present to pray.
I shall never forget the violent impression I felt on seeing so many thousands of the faithful fall to their knees, weeping as they prayed aloud and implored, full of confidence, the maternal protection of the Queen of Heaven. It was at this moment that many of those present saw an oval, not much larger than an egg, of a vivid and brilliant white colour, with its wider part turned downwards, describe a long straight line across the sky. Some observed this phenomenon for longer, others for a shorter time. I did not see it and I am sorry about that.
Dr. F.* and many of my fellow townsmen state that they saw it too.
O dr. F. e muitos patricios meus affirmam que tambem o viram.
Some of these, whose seriousness it is not permissible to doubt, assert that they made out a kind of flowers falling from the sky, which did not touch the ground but disappeared on reaching a certain height. The atmosphere took on a yellow colour, perhaps because of the diminution of the sunlight.
What happened in that quick quarter of an hour is never forgotten, but it is not easy to describe. The sight of the immense kneeling multitude, its anxious and restless expectation, the devotion with which it invoked the Most Holy Virgin and finally the august solemnity of the moment made up an admirable and touching spectacle.
As soon as the sun recovered its usual light, the children, who had remained all the time beside the holm-oak shrub and who declared that the Most Holy Virgin had appeared to them for the fifth time, withdrew to their homes, and at the same time the first
waves of people left, and the crowd little by little dispersed. The most conservative estimates put the people present at the moment of the apparition at fifteen to seventeen thousand. There were, however, those who thought there were more than twenty thousand. I give no opinion, but what is certain is that I have never seen so many people together. It was a beautiful spectacle”.
Obliged by the love of truth, I do not wish to conclude without saying that my impressions of what happened that day at Fatima were not encouraging.
I did not go near the place of the apparitions and hardly talked with anyone, staying on the road some three hundred metres away, and I noted only the diminution of the sunlight, which seemed to me an unimportant phenomenon, due perhaps to the high altitude of the hills. I therefore continued to maintain a prudent but benevolent wait-and-see attitude, as I had since the events of August, for before them I invariably smiled in absolute incredulity on hearing any reference to the apparitions of Fatima.
And I shall stop here for today, for this letter is already long.
