"... Dear Promoter of the Faith
“... Sr. Promotor da Fé
In May 1917 a rumour spread that three children – livestock herders – had seen a lady dressed in white appear to them while they were saying the rosary together at the place called Cova da Iria, in the parish of Fátima. She told them not to be afraid, that she was Our Lady of the Rosary; that they should come there every month on the 13th to say the rosary, that she would always appear to them, and that on 13 October she would tell them a secret. The story spread at once through the surrounding hamlets, but no one could believe it, since it seemed almost impossible that the Virgin should come down from heaven to earth and appear to three unschooled children on the harsh and sandy uplands of the Serra de Aire. The 13th of June arrives and I, eager to know what is going on, make my way to the place to find out how much truth there is in it.
It is a quarter to twelve when I reach the said Cova, and I find some 12 people waiting there. I turn to someone and ask: Well, where are these children who see Our Lady here? And a voice answers me: wait, it isn't late yet. A few moments later, here they come, accompanied by a small group. They kneel beside the famous little holm oak and begin to say the rosary. I count the people and see that some 40 are present. When the litany* is over, Lúcia says: "Here She comes", and tells them to kneel. She begins to question and answer someone whom my eyes cannot see nor my ears hear. It is the second apparition, and once again she states there, before the small number of spectators – for they cannot yet be called believers – that She is telling her that she will come there every month, that 13 October will be the last time, and that she will then tell a secret.
Terminada a ladainha, a Lúcia diz: “Lá vem Ela”, e manda ajoelhar.
Lúcia turns her gaze across space as if following with her eyes someone who is rising, and as if in ecstasy she points out the direction she is taking until she is lost in the Infinite. As an unbeliever, I want to deny everything, even what I am seeing; but looking at the atmosphere I see that everything is clouded. It seems that two opposing currents of air are meeting there, raising a cloud of dust. The sky darkens and I seem to hear thunder underground. I feel that the temperature is almost supernatural, and I am afraid to be there. I return home thinking about this phenomenon and trying to find a way to interpret it. My mother asks me what I saw, to which I answered that I don't know, but I am certain that, although there is a mystery, it bodes no good. I do not want to believe, and I condemn this apparition everywhere.
On 13 July there are many more people.
The same phenomena occur as in the previous month. Its fame spreads, and now the place is one of the great centres visited by people of all classes.
On 13 August the crowd grows, and anyone looking at the Cova, which forms a basin among the small hills or knolls around it, sees a touching spectacle.
Pilgrims arrive from all sides singing hymns, and we feel we are living some happy hours. The hour has passed and the children have not appeared; the people are waiting impatiently when word runs through that mass of people that the administrator* of Ourém has taken them away. Protests are heard and, when they are about to start breaking up, an outcry is heard and a wave of heads turns towards the sky, each person declaring what he is seeing. Then I look at the sky and see the clouds changing colour and racing in different directions.
13 September dawned without a cloud on the horizon. A scorching sun makes us seek the shade. Lúcia says the rosary at the appointed hour. The conversation with the said Lady follows, and as soon as she says: there she goes, the sun darkens so much that the moon and the stars that encircle the firmament can be seen. The heat lessens and a breeze comes to caress our brows. Then, very high up, cutting through the air from East to West, some very small bodies are seen, white as snow. Some say they are doves, but one can see perfectly well that they are not birds. On the slope on the east side was the reverend Father Joaquim Ferreira Gonçalves das Neves, parish priest of Santa Catarina da Serra; seeing that he was perhaps looking without seeing anything, I go up to him and ask him what he sees, and he answers that he sees nothing. I point out a direction to him and at once he says that he is now
A Lúcia reza o terço à hora indicada.

13 October dawns like a day in the depth of winter, though the rain falls gently. It rains without stopping all morning. The paths and roads are full of people who, coming from distant parts, had not reckoned on rain, since not a drop had fallen for many months. On arriving at the place they lit fires while waiting for the hour.
Many people went to stay at the hamlet of Chainça, which is a league* away, among them two gentlemen, a Mr Ferreira from Leiria and another from near Caldas, said to be a priest and a doctor. The next day, as it was raining hard and they were not used to such harsh weather, they could not go on their way, especially as they had nothing to protect them from the rain.
Nobody could lend umbrellas, since there were too few even for their own needs. So I took a broken one and mended it for one of them, and lent my own to the other, going without one myself and also arriving dripping wet.
The moment of the apparition arrives, and what the whole world knows takes place. The sun spins round on itself, and all who were wet are found to be dry, myself among them. A gentleman from Leiria appeared handing out pictures of the three children and of Our Lady, and entrusted me with a bundle of them although he did not know me.
From then on there is always a coming and going of people there, driven by faith: some asking favours, others giving thanks for graces received. Then comes the influenza epidemic* that ravaged the country, and the believers flock there, forming processions in their villages and crossing the stony hills and deserted heaths in the small hours of the night, in the fiercest gales, to ask that Virgin, consoler of the afflicted, for protection and mercy. Faith keeps growing, and from all sides one hears the miracles proclaimed.
I, in spite of everything, went on disbelieving, following the prudence of Holy Church.
I had suffered from my stomach for 12 years; I vomited everything I ate. I consult the best doctors in the hope of being cured by medicine, but in vain... I have been given up, but the Lisbon hospitals still remain as my last resort. I go to the hospital of S. José and am examined by Dr. Damas Mora, head of the casualty department of that hospital. As my condition was far from satisfactory, he had me admitted to the Desterro hospital, where he operated on me on 18 December 1917, with, as his assistants (though I do not

Hermano Medeiros e Balbino do Rego.
The doctor on duty is called and, after examining me carefully, says that I am beyond hope. Both my lungs are affected; the fever is always above 40 degrees. They have cupping glasses* applied to me, one after another, but I needed medicines to fight the fever, and that was impossible, because nothing could go into my stomach. The operation had been one of the most delicate, and so I could only expect death. I was almost always delirious, but in the short intervals when I was lucid I thought about my situation and saw that it was critical. I see that I am dying in a hospital without the comfort that the ministers of religion bring to souls in dark and troubled hours, without seeing at my bedside a mother, brothers, sisters, relatives and friends to encourage and strengthen me. Before I go down into a cemetery grave, I want to write once more to my mother, telling her that I am dying and asking her to pray and have prayers said for me, for here I have no one to do it.
That request was made by the reverend parish priest of Santa Catarina, I believe at the Mass of the Souls on Christmas Day. I can expect nothing from the world, and then everything that happened in that blessed Cova comes to my mind, and that Virgin who said she was the Consoler of the afflicted.
I know well that I must die, but it is sad not to have, in that agonising moment and painful trance, anyone around my bed to pray and give comfort. Then, encouraged by a great faith, I ask Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima that, if it were possible for me still to go home one day and see my family, I would hold a feast in her honour, have a sermon preached, and go to the place to say a rosary. The next day I no longer had any fever, and two days later my lungs were completely cured. To the doctors it seemed like a dream: when they thought me dead, I appeared before them cured. Was it medicine? No, because I took no medicines. So do pneumonia and a fever of 40 degrees clear up in three days, by chance? Has anyone who had a stomach operation and then caught pneumonia ever survived? Let whoever knows answer.
They may say that I would have got better in the same way, but as I am certain that I escaped only through a great miracle and through the great faith with which I clung to Our Lady, I shall say this always and everywhere, cost what it may. I had the parish priest of Santa Catarina charged with fulfilling that promise, and he likewise preached the sermon of thanksgiving at the said feast in the small chapel of Chainça in September 1919. The Cova da Iria is for me a little corner of Heaven to which I owe
