THE HEATH OF MIRACLES
A CHARNECA DOS MILAGRES
"Trust in the Virgin and run,
you'll see what it costs you"
"Fia-te na Virgem e corre,
verás a despeza que fazes"
From a reader, as assiduous as all those who write to newspapers, we have received the following letter, which we make public because we think it contains a useful lesson for those who suffer from the vice of curiosity:
Mr Editor. - I am Portuguese and from Lisbon, two strong reasons to justify the spirit of curiosity with which I am endowed and which is, in my view, one of the reasons for living and one of man's noblest defects. As a curious man I went, therefore, to Fátima on the 13th, to "bear witness" to the miracles that might occur and that had been announced with such loud and clamorous advertising. There was no more impartial spectator in the audience than I, who, as to the existence of God, neither affirm nor deny, because, if He exists, His essence is surely too great and complicated for my short human intelligence to conceive it, and if He does not exist, that fact seems to me reason enough for me not to wear myself out convincing others of that very thing or of the contrary.
Sr. Redator.
I went, then, to Fátima, Mr Editor, and this impulse of my curiosity cost me some money and inconvenience that I now sincerely regret, because the truth is that it was only by reading the report in the
Seculo* that I learned of the miracles that had occurred, the names of the inspired little shepherds and even the number of people awaiting the revelation from heaven; for my eyes, used to seeing crowds, did not register the thousands that the reporter of that newspaper claims. We have fifty thousand men in France*, and it already seems to us that the whole country is over there. Well, it was through the Seculo that I learned that the sun had “danced”, that Lucia had spoken with the Virgin, and that a fellow called Ramalho, who looks like Paul Déroulède*, had recited the Creed perched on the step of a motor omnibus. Of course I feel my curiosity cheated and the money spent wasted, because of all the happenings recounted by the Seculo I observed and can confirm only one: the invitation made to the men to bare their heads before the evidence of the miracle and the holiness of the little shepherds. A rather sui generis invitation, more like an order, such as the one addressed to me by one of the believers in these humbly Christian terms: “Take your lid off, you rascal!”
But if I write to you, Mr Editor, it is not to lament the time and money squandered; it is simply to ask you to insist, in the columns of your reputable newspaper, of which I am an assiduous reader, that the “experts” to whom the reporter of the Seculo appeals should explain the astronomical phenomena said to have occurred on the thirteenth of this month on the heath of Fátima. Since I saw nothing there, I at least want the observatories and the scientific societies of the speciality to pronounce on it, so as to get my money's worth and not leave the reporter of the Seculo, Mr Avelino de Almeida, compromised, who seems to believe a good deal in science and a little in the Virgin too.
Press for the explanations, Mr Editor, and you will have rendered, if you obtain them, a valuable service to those who, like me, saw nothing miraculous at Fátima, perhaps because they were not in a state of grace. I, at least, was in a state of... paying. Believe me, etc.
Creia-me, etc.
