JOURNALISM
JORNALISMO
A friend whom the writer of these lines admires and esteems as much as anyone wrote to us last Tuesday3 telling us of the impression left on his enlightened and honest mind by an article that the Seculo* had published the day before4 about Fatima and the spectacles now taking place there month after month.
Since the Seculo was not a Catholic newspaper, still less a sheet in the service of reaction*, our illustrious friend quite naturally expected that, in dealing with the miracles of Fatima, it would in no way flatter the speculation and fanaticism that dreamed up such an invention and are spreading it at full sail. He expected it instead to use its wide circulation to help those who, partly indignant and partly saddened by the scenes taking place in those parts, are doing what they can against these manifestations of the most appalling mental regression, trying as far as possible to protect the immeasurable gullibility of this still so astonishingly uneducated Portuguese people.
Nothing of the sort. It is true that in the article in question the Seculo tries now and then — so seldom! — to give us the impression that
Nada disso.
it does not believe in the apparitions of Fatima, and that in its view they are nothing but a story without any basis in truth, a thing with neither head nor tail. Its special correspondent in those miracle-working parts asked, for example, a lad from Chão de Maçãs* whether he had seen the Lady yet, and he relates that the lad retorted: All I saw there was stones, carts, motor cars, beasts of burden and people. However, although written with the aim of pleasing both Greeks and Trojans, or, as the saying goes, God and the devil, the words of the organ of the rua Formosa* can, in short and unfortunately, have only one effect: to promote the miracles of Fatima even further, and to strengthen in the minds of the ignorant and simple people the belief in the apparitions of the Virgin, every month, in those parts of Portugal...
We shall be told, however, that in lending itself to such a role the Seculo acts less out of love for religion and for those who profess it or live off it than in obedience to its material interests, and that what looks to us like a question of shared principles, of communion in the same faith, is nothing but shop-counter business, always ready to peddle any sort of wares to the good faith of its numerous customers. That makes its responsibility all the greater, in our view. For what under the first hypothesis would have been logical, though still open to debate, becomes in the second case the result of a purely mercenary motive, a mere money-making operation — all the more reprehensible because it has chosen to exploit one of the most vulnerable points of popular ignorance, precisely the one in which that ignorance has always seemed to us most deserving of our sorrow and regret.
No; this is not, cannot be, the mission of the press. To guide, yes, not to mislead; to sow light, not to spread darkness; to lead societies along the broad highway of civilisation and progress, and never to make them turn into and follow the narrow, tortuous byways where only error and falsehood reign.
Does the Seculo aim to keep up the reputation and the profit it has for many years claimed of being the newspaper with the largest circulation in Portu-

gal? That is no concern of ours; but let it try to achieve its aim not by flattering obscurantism and seeking to increase, at its expense, the number of consumers of its merchandise, but by preaching sound principles and so striving to win new allies for its work among the great mass of readers; not by evoking a past full of superstitions and complacently making its most unctuous apology, but by looking to the future and advancing resolutely towards the great conquests that await us there; not by helping the whole Portuguese people to fall into ecstasy, at Fatima or in any similar backwater, before a divinity that only their uneducated and excited minds let them see among the clouds, appealing to it and expecting from it every benefit and every happiness, individual and collective — but rather by helping the society to which we belong to abandon abstractions and mysticism, to embrace fully the positivism of the present hour, and to learn to rely on itself alone in solving the many questions that concern its interests; making it show itself, in every respect, worthy of the great name Portugal has made for itself abroad, thanks to the position it took in the war and the heroism with which its soldiers have conducted themselves in the thick of the fighting.
gal?
The Seculo sometimes has sound ideas; the liberating wind of freedom often blows from its quarter, persistent and strong. Ah! but its craving for pennies* has made it behave, over Fatima, as not even the worst of all the reactionary gazettes published in Portugal has so far dared to behave.
