THE FÁTIMA "MIRACLE" AND THE "ABDUCTION" OF THE MIRACULOUS TRAPPINGS
O "MILAGRE" DE FÁTIMA E O "RAPTO" DOS ATRIBUTOS MILAGROSOS
SANTARÉM, 23.—C.— Since Santarém is known as the land of miracles, it did not want to let Fátima get ahead of it this time either. And so people from here went last night by motor car to that village in the council of Vila Nova de Ourém and brought back to Santarém the trunk of the holm oak where the virgin made her apparitions on the 13th of each month. Along with this part of the "holy" tree, cut down with an axe, they also brought a small table which stood beside the tree and passed for an altar, several prints of religious images, two crosses, one of wood and the other of cane, an arch of myrtle, a tin serving as a vase with greenery in it, and two lanterns: all the material that adorned the miraculous spot.
All this arrived in Santarém this morning and has been on public display in a house on Praça Sá da Bandeira, where the crowds have been extraordinary all day and for part of the night. It is said that from tomorrow on the exhibition will be held in another place, with paid admission, the proceeds going to a charitable institution.
On the "miraculous" trunk on display here, there are various signs that pieces of bark were cut from it, which the believers had carried off on the 13th of this month as miracle-working relics.
