THE FÁTIMA “MIRACLE” AND THE “ABDUCTION” OF THE MIRACULOUS TREE
O “MILAGRE” DE FÁTIMA E O “RAPTO” DA ARVORE MILAGROSA
SANTARÉM. 24.— C. — The pilgrimage of visitors continued here today to the trunk of the tree of the apparition of the Virgin of Fátima and to the objects that superstition had placed there, which arrived in Santarém yesterday. As it had been rumoured that admission to the exhibition of these objects would be charged at so much a head, with the proceeds going to this city's school canteens, the president of that charitable institution asks us to state that the canteens will not accept any money from such a source.
— Last night a crowd of townspeople organised a parade in the style of a procession, with some drums at the front, followed by the branches of the famous tree of the Virgin's apparition at Fátima. The parade also carried the arch of myrtle, the lit lanterns, the cross and other objects that the believers had placed on the makeshift altar.
SANTAREM, 25.
The procession chanted picturesque “litanies” and marched at a measured pace through the city's main streets, dispersing in the Praça Sá da Bandeira, where it had set out. Many of the demonstrators then went and gathered in front of a window in the Rua Direita, from which a bucket of water had been thrown that caught some of the demonstrators and one of the policemen who had joined the parade. They stayed there for some time, in a hostile attitude towards the owner of the house, until a corporal and a constable of the civil police appeared and asked the demonstrators to disperse, which they then did.
