The devotees of Fátima, of whom there are a great many in Santarém, went by motor car to that place on the night of the 23rd and carried back to the said city the trunk of the holm oak where the Virgin made her apparitions. Along with this part of the “holy” tree, cut down with an axe, they also brought a small table which stood beside it and passed for an altar, several prints of religious images, two crosses, one of wood and the other of cane, an arch of myrtle, a tin serving as a vase with greenery in it, and two lanterns: all the material that adorned the miraculous spot.
All this has been on public display in a house on Praça Sá da Bandeira, where the crowds have been extraordinary all day and for part of the night. It is said that the exhibition will move to another place, with paid admission, the proceeds going to a charitable institution.

On the “miraculous” trunk there are various signs that pieces of bark were cut from it, which the believers had carried off on the 13th of this month as relics.
