A MARVELLOUS CASE
CASO MARAVILHOSO
XXX
XXX
Fátima — a word until now lost among the countless names of insignificant hamlets and remote villages in the provinces of our mainland — is now religiously treasured in the memory of millions of believers as the name of a privileged place which Heaven has chosen, in our own day, as the stage for its merciful prodigies.
Whether or not this multitude is deceived in its pious acceptance of what the newspapers say happened recently in that obscure village of Estremadura, according to the testimony of some fifty thousand people of all social classes, religious opinions and degrees of education, it is not for us to say, nor is it our business to ascertain it. In this report we confine ourselves merely to the simple office of chronicler, making use for this purpose of the trustworthy information of believing and unbelieving persons, eyewitnesses of the fact which they present as prodigious.
Fátima is a small parish of some one thousand seven hundred souls, simple and good, as in general are all those of our villages, where, as is the case there, the pivot around which all individual and collective life turns is Religion. It lies on the slope of the Serra de Minde, some eight kilometres south-west of Vila Nova d'Ourem, to whose municipality it belongs, between the cities of Leiria and Thomar, and roughly half way between Lisbon and Coimbra.
From a private letter written by a distinguished gentleman living on the mainland to his family in this city, we know that this fellow townsman of ours was one of the very many witnesses of the marvellous event that took place at Fátima on the thirteenth of this month. What eyewitnesses said was happening there on the thirteenth of each month since May had so captured everyone's attention that our fellow townsman set off for the place on the twelfth of this month, by car, with an illustrious friend. At Fátima he found an immense mass of people, which he estimated at some fifty thousand, who had come there drawn by the announced prodigy, those who could not go on foot using every kind of conveyance. On that heath, dreary by nature and drearier still on that dark day, when a fine, persistent drizzle soaked all the spectators, there were more than five hundred cars, which fully agrees with the information of a correspondent of the Diario de Noticias in Vila Nova d'Ourem, who says that more than a hundred cars, one hundred and thirty-five bicycles and two hundred and forty carriages of various kinds returned from Fátima through that town.
When the hour at which the miracle was expected arrived, our informant says, the sun, appearing for the first time that day, could be gazed at steadily by that whole crowd, which its rays tinged successively blue, yellow and purple, while strange tremblings and movements were noticed in it.
Such is the gist of what the said letter says, which was kindly made available to us, and which narrates what all that immense mass of people witnessed, in accordance with the testimonies which we transcribe below from various newspapers and which were written by those who went there expressly to inform the public of whatever happened there.
For the sensational news of what had been happening at Fátima was already spreading far, arousing everyone's curiosity.
On the day of the Ascension of the Lord, the thirteenth of May, three children,
No dia d'Ascenção do Senhor, trese de maio, tres creanças,
Lucia, aged ten, Francisco, aged nine, and Jacinta, aged seven, while grazing livestock near that village, had the pious idea of praying the rosary all together. During this devotion they saw, according to their statements, a lady of extreme beauty who asked them to come there on that day for six months. The children did so, and many other people also went to the place of the apparition, their number growing as such sensational news spread.
On the third of September the attendance there came to some twenty thousand people, who observed nothing strange, but who took back to their home districts the news that on the thirteenth of October, the sixth and last day of the announced apparitions, a sensational and miraculous event would corroborate the truth of the apparition of which those three children spoke.
It was this news that drew some fifty thousand people there, according to the estimates of various spectators and of a correspondent of the Diario de Noticias.
The important Catholic daily of Lisbon — A Ordem, whose director is the most distinguished engineer and well-known writer José Fernando de Sousa (Nemo), sent one of its editors to Fátima, from whose impressions published in that newspaper we extract the following:
“What is there at Fátima? What has there been? [...] which was deeply moving.
“Em Fátima que ha? Que tem havido? [...] que fortemente comovia.
O Dia, the well-known and highly regarded daily of the capital, published on the Fátima affair a beautiful article by the illustrious writer the Most Excellent Dona Maria Magdalena Martel Patricio, a distinguished contributor to the Pagina Feminina of the Diario Nacional, in which that noble lady describes, in her charming style, her impressions of the extraordinary event she witnessed.
Here is how Dona Martel Patricio describes the event:
At one o'clock in the afternoon, sun time*, the rain stopped.[...] thousands upon thousands of God's creatures!
Mr Avelino d’Almeida, a renegade Catholic now in the radical and and Jacobin* ranks of O Seculo, also went there as that newspaper's special correspondent, and afterwards published in it an account of what he observed. From what he wrote we take the following:
O sr.
The rain falls incessantly, but nobody despairs. [...] — What a pity! There are still men who do not uncover their heads before so stupendous a miracle!
A chuva cai incessantemente mas ninguem desespera. [...]
As a result of the justified sensation caused by this event, a reporter of O Seculo went to interview the celebrated astronomer Mr Frederico Oom*, who, asked about the solar disturbances observed at Fátima, said:
“If it were a cosmic phenomenon, the astronomical observatories [...] to the system of the worlds, however minimal they may be. So you see...”
This declaration by that illustrious man of science is important, for it shows that the marvellous fact observed at Fátima by thousands of individuals was not a natural phenomenon, since not only was it not seen anywhere else, but not even the most delicate scientific instruments recorded it.
There we leave our esteemed readers the account we promised yesterday, awaiting the judgement of the Church on the authenticity of the miracle and of the apparition.
