The apparition of the Virgin
A aparição da Virgem
A few kilometres from Vila Nova de Ourem, on a heath belonging to the parish of Fátima, the Virgin Mary appears in flesh and blood on the afternoon of the 13th of each month, according to the testimony of a certain little shepherd, confirmed by certain persons who are in a state of divine grace — the rest, heretically, refuse to believe in so miraculous a fact.
In September and October of this year we were spending the summer not far from the place of the apparition, and we confess that curiosity did not move us to attend; rather, we kept to our habitual indifference, as if the apparition of the mother of Jesus Christ were for us the most natural thing in the world. We saw hundreds, perhaps thousands, of pilgrims pass by on their way to the heath: believers, the curious, picnic lovers, sellers of cool water and capilé*, reporters, retail wine merchants, a varied and interesting multitude; and we gave only a few moments' thought to the cause of the pilgrimage.
Thought, but not wonder. The motive that took each of those persons to the gathering was entirely coherent and in no way revealed any unbalanced faculties. To the reader, educated in modern positivism, those who will seem strangest are certainly the ones who believe in the apparition and those who say they saw the Virgin Mary.
Well, to us those very persons seem reasonable, since their minds were brought up in mysticism. After all, in the cities, in the centres conventionally called civilised, don't people believe in witches? Don't fortune-tellers proclaim the infallibility of their prophecies, and aren't they consulted even by individuals whom we all regard as eminent and intelligent?
And don't people believe, for example, that there are ministers who miraculously make a budget deficit disappear with a stroke of the pen, or that others, if they came to power, would immediately bring food prices back down to normal, etc.? There are fanatics everywhere and of every kind, from the one who talks with the Virgin Mary on the crags of Fátima to those who hold the predictions of Mr Antonio José de Almeida* to be infallible.
Only a few days ago we heard a Democrat* say, in confidence, in a low voice, apropos of Mr Afonso Costa's* visit to the front:
— Don't say a word, my dear fellow, but he is going to impose peace on the Germans. This time they'll have no choice but to give in.
Blessed are those who believe!
Felizes os que crêem!
