In September and October of the current year we found ourselves summering not far from the place of the apparition, and we confess that curiosity did not move us to attend; rather we kept to our habitual indifference, as if the apparition of the mother of Jesus Christ were for us the most natural thing in this world. We saw hundreds, thousands perhaps, of pilgrims pass by on their way to the heath: believers, the curious, lovers of picnics, sellers of cool water and capillaire, reporters, retail wine merchants, a varied and interesting multitude, and we devoted only a few moments of cogitation to the cause of the pilgrimage.
