On the twenty-ninth day of the month of November of the year nineteen hundred and seventeen, in this Municipal Administration of Vila Nova d'Ourem, where the Most Worthy Administrator, citizen Artur d'Oliveira Santos, was present, with me, Custodio Jacintho Vieira, clerk of the above Administration, acting as secretary in the absence of the proper official, there appeared the citizen Antonio dos Santos, married, farmer, resident at Aljustrel, parish of Fátima, so that the necessary questions might be put to him concerning the cutting of trees (holm-oak shrubs) on the thirteenth of October last, at the place called Cóva da Iria, in the same parish; in the presence of the witnesses Manoel Rodrigues Antunes and Jose Vicente da Fonseca Pereira, both married, the first a landowner resident at Espite, in the parish of the same name, and the second an officer of this Administration resident at Alburitel, parish of Ceissa, who, after a prior declaration on their honour, promised to follow the questions and answers as they were put: _____

Aos vinte e nove dias do mêz de Novembro do ano de mil novecentos e dezesete, nesta Administração do Concelho de Vila Nova d'Ourem, onde s'encontrava o Meretissimo Administrador cidadão Artur d'Oliveira Santos, comigo Custodio Jacintho Vieira, amanuense da Administração supra, servindo de secretario no impedimento do competente, aqui compareceu o cidadão Antonio dos Santos, casado, agricultor, morador em Aljustrel, freguesia de Fatima, afim de se lhe fazerem as necessarias perguntas acerca do córte de arvores, (carrasqueiras) no dia treze de Outubro findo, no sitio chamado a Cóva da Iria, da mesma freguesia; e na presença das testemunhas Manoel Rodrigues Antunes e Jose Vicente da Fonseca Pereira, casados, o primeiro proprietario e morador em Espite, freguesia do mesmo nome, e o segundo oficial desta Administração e morador em Alburitel, freguesia de Ceissa, os quaes com previa declaração d'honra, prometeram seguir as perguntas e respostas, conforme fossem feitas: _____

He declared that his name is Antonio dos Santos, [1v] forty-nine years of age, native and resident of Aljustrel, parish of Fátima. _____

Declarou chamar-se Antonio dos Santos, de [1v] quarenta e nove anos feitos, natural e morador em Aljustrel, freguesia de Fatima. _____

Questioned about the cutting of the holm-oak shrubs or holm oaks, he declared: That on his property at the Cóva da Iria, at the spot where his daughter Lucia said a Saint had appeared to her, three small holm oaks were cut, two of them cut with a saw or handsaw, and the third with an axe or billhook, they not having been cut on the _____

Perguntado acerca do córte das carrasqueiras ou azinheiras, declarou: Que na sua propriedade, da Cóva da Iria, no local aonde sua filha Lucia dizia lhe aparecera uma Santa, foram cortadas trez azinheiras pequenas, sendo duas cortadas a sérra ou serróte, e a terceira com machado ou podôa, não tendo sido cortadas no dia _____

thirteenth of October last but some days later⁶, though he does not know the exact day, nor who the person or persons were who cut them⁷. That the loss he suffered is reckoned at two or three escudos^*. That he has no witnesses of the fact.

treze de Outubro findo mas sim dias depois⁶, egnorando comtudo o dia cérto, e não sabendo tambem quem foi a pessôa ou pessôas que as cortaram⁷. Que o prejuiso que sofreu é calculado em dois ou trez escudos. Que não tem testemunhas do facto.

In witness whereof the present record was drawn up, which, after being read, is to be signed by the Administrator, the deponent not signing because he declares he does not know how, and by the witnesses Manoel Rodrigues Antunes and José Vicente da Fonseca Pereira.

Do que para constar se lavrou o presente auto, que depois de lido vae ser assinado pelo Administrador, não assinando o depoente por declarar não saber, e pelas testemunhas Manoel Rodrigues Antunes e José Vicente da Fonseca Pereira.
