REPUBLIC AND FREE THOUGHT
REPUBLICA E LIVRE PENSAMENTO
The mission to Ourem and Fátima was a fine triumph for the twofold cause
The reactionary elements, with simpering clerico-Integralist Adelaidism at their head, were nauseated by the fact that the Civil Registry Association had resolved to appoint a mission to go to the very spot chosen as the theatre of the indecent "miracle-mongering" comedy of the supposed "apparition" of a no less supposed "virgin" to a child of Fátima, a "miracle" advertised, prints and all, in organs of wide circulation. There was no lack of gloomy prophecies and other attempts to prevent the mission from going there. All was in vain, however, for there was nothing that could deflect the envoys of the Civil Registry Association, Messrs. Antonio da Conceição Vasques, Augusto José Vieira and João Machado Toledo, from carrying out the charge with which they had been entrusted. And the result was what was expected: a triumph for the meritorious body and for the cause it defends.

The introductions having been made by our friend and devoted fellow party member Artur de Oliveira Santos, worthy administrator of the council of Vila Nova de Ourem, an intimate dinner was offered to the visitors at the home of our fellow party member Mr Rodrigues Trezentos, which went off in the liveliest fashion, only one toast being proposed, by the head of the mission.
At Vila Nova de Ourem
Em Vila Nova de Ourem
The journey to the seat of the council was relatively quick; there, on the travellers' arrival, repeated volleys of rockets crackled in the air, while at the Republican Centre, where the solemn session was to be held, they were given an affectionate welcome. It was 9 p.m. when Mr Artur Santos opened the session, eloquently setting out its aims, introducing the speakers and proposing for the chair our colleague Augusto José Vieira, who, received with a warm ovation by the large audience, which literally filled the vast hall of the Centre, chose as secretaries Messrs. Moura Zenoglio and Albertino Ferreira. Amid the most enthusiastic applause, rousing and patriotic speeches were delivered by the chairman and Messrs. Conceição Vasques, Machado Toledo, Moura Zenoglio and Albertino Ferreira, who recounted at length the history of the glorious date being commemorated, sang the praises of the green-and-red flag of the Fatherland emancipated by the Republic, and, then entering upon the main subject that had brought the Lisbon mission there, fell hard upon clerical reaction, the assembly applauding them with growing enthusiasm, the ladies being the first to support with their applause the passages in which the attacks were most vehement. The vile imposture of Fátima was valiantly lashed, all the speakers castigating this ignoble means of speculating on the ignorance and naivety of the people so as more easily to
exploit and oppress them. Incidentally the European war was also dealt with, the allied nations being glorified and the Germanophilia of the Vatican condemned with the utmost energy, the Vatican having been bribed by the Boches with the lure of the restoration of the pope's temporal power. The session, which was vibrant with enthusiasm throughout, closed at half past eleven at night, with warm cheers being raised for the Fatherland, the Republic, free thought, the Civil Registry Association and its envoys, and for Drs. Afonso Costa, Magalhães Lima, Teofilo Braga, etc. A group of charming little children, holding national flags, sang the Portuguesa and the Maria da Fonte very correctly, and were enthusiastically applauded.
explorar e oprimir.
At Fátima and the Cova da Iria
Em Fátima e na Cova da Iria
On Sunday, after an intimate luncheon at the home of Artur Santos, the visitors set off, accompanied by a group of freethinkers from Vila Nova de Ourem, for Fátima, where they made a short stop, during which they were informed that the parish priest there, Father Manuel Marques Ferreira, had gone to celebrate Mass at the chapel of Ortiga, eight kilometres away, in order to draw his parishioners away from there.
Smiling at the tonsured one's ridiculous trick, the excursionists went on to the Cova da Iria, the theatre chosen for the miracle. Despite the great distance and the difficulties of transport, and despite the priest's trick as well, there was no lack of people to listen to the speakers, Messrs. Augusto José Vieira, Conceição Vasques, Machado Toledo and Artur Santos, who reported a telegram of adherence from the Democratic Republican Centre of Leiria. All the speakers stressed that they had not come there to offend or disrespect the sincere beliefs of anyone whatever, but only to castigate the clerical speculation of the swindlers of the people and to convince the people that whoever talks to them of miracles and apparitions has no other aim than to dupe them the better to enslave them. Warm cheers for the Republic, enthusiastically returned, were raised beside the crude contraption built there of wooden laths, for show. In the distance, poor fanaticised women were singing the *Bemdito! * This proves the need for missions like this one to be repeated. The following telegram was sent to the President of the Republic:
The freethinkers of Vila Nova de Ourem and the representatives of the Civil Registry Association salute the Republic in the person of its first magistrate and express their wish to see the freedom of the national conscience guaranteed.
The return was made by way of Aljustrel, with the aim of seeing the miracle-working children, above all the seer Lucia, which was not achieved, as she had gone with the priest to Ortiga, and the others were refused by their mother, naturally coached to do so by the priest. Policing was carried out by a detachment of the National Republican Guard under the command of 2nd Sergeant Mr Mauricio Costa, a devoted republican and convinced freethinker.
Mauricio Costa, dedicado republicano e convicto livre pensador.
The banquet of fraternisation
O banquete de confraternização
In the evening a sumptuous banquet was served in the hall of the Republican Centre, which went off in the liveliest fashion, Messrs. Artur Santos, Augusto José Vieira, Machado Toledo, Albertino Ferreira, José Candido de Carvalho, Conceição Vasques, Moura Zenoglio and Alfredo Rodrigues Cunha raising enthusiastic toasts to the Fatherland, the Republic, the Civil Registry Association and its delegates, the army and the navy, the allied nations, Drs. Afonso Costa, Alexandre Braga, Magalhães Lima and Teofilo Braga, the old republican Mr Manuel Pereira Gomes, etc. The envoys from Lisbon were made honorary members of the Republican Centre, the diplomas being handed to them on that occasion, for which they gave heartfelt thanks. A children's choir sang, amid warm applause, the Portuguesa, the Marseillaise, the Maria da Fonte and the hymn of the Restoration. Thus ended, leaving everyone with the most pleasant impressions, these two fine days of republican and anti-clerical propaganda
