AN INFAMY AND A "FIASCO"
UMA INFAMIA E UM "FIASCO"
VILLA NOVA D'OUREM, 4 — Some freethinkers from Lisbon, delegates of the notorious civil registration association, did not give up their exploit of coming to hold a session of Jacobin* propaganda at the democratic centre of this town, the administrator of the concelho* having distributed invitations to this much-trumpeted session. It took place on the night of 1 December, the anniversary of one of the most dazzling pages of our history, when a handful of brave men, full of love for their country and of faith in God, shook off the foreign yoke*!
Well, it was on this very date that the gentlemen of free thought, who neither think nor are free, in the famous phrase of a great writer of our land, took it into their heads to come here and insult our beliefs, apropos, or rather malapropos, of the Fátima affair.
In spite of the great advertisements, in which could be read the greatest blasphemies against all that is most sacred, they managed to gather, with difficulty, only half a dozen people of no standing, before whom they said the greatest infamies and uttered the greatest horrors against God and against the Church.
It is as well to say that before the session the speakers had eaten well, and drunk better, at the house of a colleague in the village of Caxarias.
The next day they went in two carriages to Fátima, accompanied by troops (such was their fear!) and civic guards, and there, at the
very place where the apparitions seem to have occurred, and before the numerous audience (14 people, including the speakers!), it seems they said little or nothing, for lack of a quorum, and closed the session without needing to put their hats on, because they already had them on their heads before they began. And so, met with contempt, the best slap in the face the people could give them, they went back to Villa Nova crestfallen and resentful, with little wish to try another such venture, which might cost them dearer, since this time they only had a few stones thrown at them, which did them no harm. — C.
