The next day they went in two carriages to Fátima, accompanied by troops (such was their fear!) and civic guards, and there, at the very place where the apparitions seem to have occurred, and before the numerous audience (14 people, including the speakers!), it seems they said little or nothing, for lack of a quorum, having closed the session without needing to put their hats on, because they already had them on their heads before they began. And so, consigned to contempt, the best slap in the face the people could give them, they went back to Villa Nova crestfallen and rancorous, with little desire to get into another such venture, which might cost them dearer, since this time they only got a few stones thrown at them, which did them no harm.
