FÁTIMA II
FÁTIMA II
At this point, the question of fact having been established, it is as well to clarify a question of form, so that we do not ourselves go and reinforce, with our prudential doubt, the rationalist scepticism of certain people set up in haughty mental superiority, who do not believe in miracles because they are sharp-eyed people who believe only in science. To those people I am very sorry to break the sad news that the interesting position of systematic denial is today perfectly unscientific.
Long gone is the time when the only truths admitted were those deduced by abstract reasoning, such as mathematical truths, or those won by direct observation and tangible experiment.
In that time, past and long past, beyond the narrow strip of so-called positive knowledge there lay only the vast sea of the unknowable, closed to every conquest of truth. Today the human spirit has broken through that flimsy palisade, and all philosophical systems grant the freedom of the city both to truths won by direct intuition and to truths deduced from a moral sentiment, or from a supernatural revelation when documented by history and sanctioned by a matono superior period of time. Those, therefore, who stopped at the limit of the tangible, those learned creatures who
did not believe in the soul because the scalpel had never dissected it, are far behind the times. They belong, as a historical curiosity, to the time of Mr. Homais, Flaubert's priceless apothecary3, who is still the great mould of the freethinkers.
Today the right to believe and the legitimacy of belief are perfectly affirmed by science, which has its own sphere but which does not constitute the only sphere of human knowledge. One may, then, believe in miracle without shame and without fear of belittling one's intelligence or subordinating one's mind.
Now, those whom I most admire in their rationalist scepticism are certain right-thinking people who pass for Christian and Catholic folk but who do not believe in miracles. This rare species is, I believe, exclusively Portuguese, and for that reason it deserved fuller comment. It will, however, be limited to the simple question: What idea do these people have of the supernatural character of their religion? What else is it but a tightly bound chain of miraculous facts in their double character, of being far above the simple natural laws, and of being related to a constant action of Providence? Miracle is the nourishing sap of Christian spiritualism, the mighty signature that God puts on the government of the world. Without it, belief in the supernatural slackens, spiritualism evaporates and its moral efficacy is reduced to mere formalities. To claim a religion without the supernatural would be to reduce God to a dormant inactivity, to relegate him to a distant remoteness from the affairs of the world, of the mind and of the heart.
Unfortunately, it is within this desolate frame that the mental and moral situation of the Portuguese people is set, in this age of immense spiritual desert, in which all the great categories of feeling have fallen into stagnation and collapse. Collapse of religion, without life or vigour, reduced to vague and scattered aspirations; collapse of spiritualism and its moral elevations, drowned by a coarse materialism; collapse of patriotism, dissolved by a stagnant love of comfort and by complete mental anarchy; collapse of the family, collapse of the national economy, collapse of all

In the tragic moment in which we live, people terrified by the spectre of anarchy, of hunger and of the dismemberment of the Nation cry out on every side with a deep intent in the midst of their drowsy semi-consciousness: Only a miracle can save us. The simple soul of the multitude seeks that saving miracle somewhere. Such is the psychological explanation of this moving case of Fátima.
I do not know whether a miracle took place at Fátima. I must place myself in the prudent state of critical doubt imposed on me by the cast of my mind, the critical discipline in which I was brought up, the risk of falling into ridicule and the obligation not to let myself be swayed by accounts that are sincere, yes, but not very reliable.
But this defensive attitude does not prevent me from believing, yes, in the miracle of Portugal. For two great reasons: the first, because the situation created for our country has no natural way out. However much my mind turns the national problem over, I cannot find one; all that remains for us is to appeal to God. The other, because I hold that the Portuguese people have before Him a current account of services which His infinite justice cannot forget. If the French celebrate the Gesta Dei per Francos, the things God did through the French, with what right can we not assert before Him the great things it pleased Him to accomplish through the greatness of our Kings, through the sword of our soldiers, through the virtues of our saints; which it pleased him to carry on the towering prows of our ships across the seas, in an enormous cargo of Faith and Civilisation consigned to the known and unknown world! God is not one to leave his debts open and unheeded. If we need a miracle he will certainly work it. Through a warrior saint of ascetic and mystical soul and victorious sword like Nun'Alvares, or through an illumined shepherdess like Joan of Arc? That matters only to God, who keeps within himself the reasons why he chooses his means.

sought that mediator in the august person of the Mother of God: and just as independence was consolidated before Santa Maria da Batalha, the discoveries were begun before Santa Maria de Belem, and the Restoration before Our Lady of the Conception of Villaviçosa, so in its mystical logic it also found the certainty of seeing appear on the celestial horizon the apparition of Our Lady of the Resurgence, rising from the celestial horizon of bluish light. "As if one saw (says Dona Magdalena Patricio), through the stained-glass windows of an immense cathedral, spreading through that gigantic nave, its pointed arches formed by the hands raised in the air".
