THE MIRACLE OF FATIMA
O MILAGRE DE FATIMA
We publish, as a matter of curiosity, a letter sent to a lady of this district by a friend of hers from Lisbon who was a witness of the famous apparition at Fatima.
My dear Mimi
Minha querida Mimi
It is eight days today since I arrived in Lisbon, back from Fatima, where I went to see the great miracle. It is impossible to describe to you what we all saw. Regina went with Emiliana, Rita and Betina on the eleventh to Rodrigo, to spend a few days. It is near Fatima. Only nine hours' journey by carriage. I was invited by M. Constança and went by motor car on the twelfth, Friday. There we did not even catch sight of each other. I thought I saw them. Since May Our Lady has been appearing to some little shepherd girls on the thirteenth of each month, having announced to them that the last month would be October, the month of the Rosary. Fatima is a heath in the middle of the hills, near Villa Nova de Ourem. It was raining torrentially and everyone stood their ground until two o'clock, the moment when the clouds drew aside, leaving the sun uncovered, and immediately there be-
Pareceu-me vel-as.
gin to pass in front of the sun rolls of very light clouds, yellow as gold, purple, carnation-coloured, etc. At this the sun seemed to break loose and plunge down upon the earth.
A moment of terror!!...
Momento de pavor!!...
Then it begins a rotating movement with incalculable speed.
Suddenly it is the moon that appears, but only for a moment, because it immediately turns into the Sacred Host, one could even see the Cross, as if carved into that opaque matter, the colour of wheat flour, very white.
Thus I saw in the void a marvellous crown of those clouds in varied colours. A spectacle of astonishing beauty!!
You cannot imagine with what tenderness God looked upon our land at that moment. At that moment we felt ourselves loved to the utmost15 ... Everyone saw, nearly eighty thousand people.
People took on the colour of the clouds. It was interesting!... The sun, with its light behind, seemed to filter the brightness as if through coloured glass.
All this was happening while Our Lady was coming down to earth to speak to little Lucia. All three children, a little boy and two little girls, see her, but only the eldest speaks (10 years old).
Our Lady became visible to some people: I was not favoured with that grace: I did not need that in order to believe. It was Rita and Betina who had that happiness, and many other people.
Rita saw before the sun the face of Our Lady, only the face, and she was becoming...I can't even say... She lost the notion of time and cannot describe what she saw. She doesn't know. Nothing can compare with the beauty and sweetness of that smile. Betina, now, was the most favoured of all26. She saw Our Lady of the Rosary coming, beautiful... coming down towards us... For her she vanished just as she drew near the earth. She was saying to Regina, weeping and trembling! Don't you see? It is the Lady of the Rosary!
Dizia ella á Regina, a chorar e a tremer! Não vês? É a Senhora do Rosário!
Why, don't you see?
Pois tu não vês?
Many other people saw.
Muitas outras pessoas viram.
There were so many signs of the supernatural that it was not possible for everyone to see everything. Around the valley chosen for so many marvels there appeared one after another, as mere ornament and with the greatest symmetry, patches in the three preferred colours. Little Lucia said it was the Lady of the Rosary, who wants a Church built for her there, and announced that God is greatly offended with the people and that He was showing His power so that they might be converted and saved. On those who gain nothing from this manifestation of His power He will send a punishment.
The impression was so strong that I think it will stay with me for ever.
What courage and persistence to face a storm like that without retreating!! In short, admirable.
Emfim admiravel.
There was not a policeman, there was nothing but the respect and holy contentment with which everyone was filled.
At a certain moment when it was raining hard the little girl told them to close their umbrellas. They were closed and the rain stopped.
Our Lady told Lucia that Saint Joseph had come to bless the people at that place and that all the believers (present there) were forgiven up to that moment. That place was left blessed, people and animals: everything was blessed. At that moment there was a great brightness. It is the most admirable miracle of the last centuries, a miracle that was seen by believers and unbelievers.40
