My very dear Mimi.

Minha muito querida Mimi.

It is a week today since I got back to Lisbon from Fatima, where I went to see the great miracle! It is impossible to describe to you what we all saw.

Regina2 went with Emiliania3, Rita4 and Bettina5 on the 11th to Rodrigo6, to spend a few days; it is near Fatima, only nine hours' journey by carriage!

A Regina2 foi com a Emiliania3, Rita4 e Bettina5, no dia 11 para Rodrigo6, passar uns poucos de dias, é perto de Fatima, só nove horas de caminho em carro!

I was invited by M. Constança and went by automobile on the 12th, Friday.

There, we didn't even catch sight of one another; I thought I saw them

Lá, nem nos avistámos, pareceu-me vel-as

Do make the effort to read the Seculo of the 15th. Everything in it is true, and much more [1v] that they do not say because they do not want to and cannot. There are no words for it.

Since May Our Lady has been appearing to some little shepherd girls, on the 13th of each month, having announced to them that the last time would be in October, the month of the Rosary.

It is on a heath, in the middle of the serra, near Villa Nova de Ourem.

It was raining torrentially and everyone stood their ground until 2 o'clock, or solar noon, the moment when the clouds drew apart to the sides leaving the sun uncovered, and immediately rolls of very light clouds began to pass in front of the sun, yellow as gold, purple, carnation-coloured, etc.

At this the sun seemed to come loose and came down [2] all all of a sudden; a moment of terror.

At this it began a rotating movement with an incalculable speed.

Suddenly it is the moon that is there, but that is only a moment; it turns into the Sacred Host, even the cross being visible as if hollowed into that opaque matter the colour of very white wheat flour.

I saw it like that in the void and around it a marvellous crown of those clouds in various colours. A spectacle of astounding beauty, you cannot imagine the delicacy of the tones, with what tenderness God looked upon our land at that moment; we felt ourselves loved to boundless extremes.

Everyone saw it, close on 100 thousand people.

Todos viram, perto de 100 mil pessoas.

[2v] People took on the colours of the clouds, it was interesting to see; the sun with its light behind seemed to pass its brightness as if through coloured glass.

All this was happening while Our Lady was coming down to earth to speak to little Lucia.

Tudo isto se passava em quanto a Nossa Senhora descia á terra a fallar á pequena Lucia.

All three children (1 little boy and 2 little girls) see, but only the eldest, 10 years old, speaks.

Our Lady became visible to some people; I was not favoured with that grace; I did not need it in order to believe.

It was Rita and Bettina who had that happiness, and many other people.

Rita saw in front of the sun the face [3] of Our Lady, only the face, and she was becoming.... I don't even know how to put it, she lost the sense of time, and cannot describe what she saw, she doesn't know how; nothing can compare with the beauty and sweetness of that smile. Bettina, though, was the most favoured of all; naturally she was the one who had most need of it.

She saw Our Lady of the Rosary coming, lovely, descending towards us; for her she vanished just as she came close to the earth.

She said to Regina, weeping and trem/bling\ Don't you see? It is the Lady of the Rosary!

Dizia ella á Regina, a chorar e a trem/er\ Não vês? É a Senhora do Rosario!

Don't you see, then? 15

Pois tu não vês? 15

Many other people saw.

Muitas outras pessoas viram.

[3v] So many were the signs of the supernatural that it was not possible for all the people to see everything; (forgive the way this is going).

Around the valley chosen for so many marvels, as a simple ornament and with the greatest symmetry, there followed one after another some patches in the the three preferred colours .

Little Lucia said it was the Lady of the Rosary, who wants a church built to her there, and announced that God is much offended with the people and that he was showing his power so that they might be converted and be saved; if they gain nothing from this manifestation of his power he will send a punishment.

[4] I neither heard nor spoke with the child, but all this seems natural to me.

She said many more things, but I don't know everything yet.

The impression was so strong that I think it will stay with me for ever.

Everyone has admired the conduct of so many people gathered together.

I was enormously moved when I saw so great and so holy a manifestation of faith. What courage and persistence to face such a storm without drawing back, without wine; admirable, in short. There was not one policeman, there was nothing, nothing, but the respect and the holy contentment with which everyone was filled.

At one moment when it was raining [4v] hard, the little girl

said to close the umbrellas; the umbrellas were closed and the rain stopped.

Our Lady told Lucia that Saint Joseph came to bless the people, and that all the believers \(\text{present there}) were forgiven up to that moment.

That place was blessed; people and animals, everything was blessed.

Aquelle logar ficou bento, pessoas e animaes, tudo foi benzido.

At that moment there was a great brightness.

N'esse momento houve uma grande claridade.

It is a great pity you were not here; what happened is, in my view, the most admirable miracle of the last centuries, a miracle that was seen by believers and unbelievers!

[5] Well, my little one, I have so much to tell you that I get lost, not knowing how to set out so many things in such a way that you don't get completely lost reading this letter. The best thing is to sum up.

Regina still hasn't turned into anything at all; Mignon gave her some French lessons during the summer; if she wanted to she could already read something, but she prefers to stay a dunce.

Now it is Rita who gives her French lessons; in short, it is the greatest disappointment of my life.

Caminha28 has been rather poorly, very weak and full of ailments; God give him health and life.

[5v] Mignon is doing very well with Mademoiselle Ballestere and already has permission to leave.

We are going to miss her enormously.

Vai-nos fazer enorme falta.

Rita is advancing by leaps and bounds, although she thinks the opposite.

A Rita caminha a passos largos, apesar de pensar o contrario.

We have a very religious maid; she makes her confession to Father Joaquim, she is 18, and on 4 December it will be a year since she came here; everyone is delighted with her.

She wants to be a Poor Clare, of the Franciscan order, as you know.

I have never known anything like her; she is extraordinary in this day and age; every spare moment is [6] used for praying, she works enormously, she is very pretty; what she has is a bit of a

temper, but she has such a will to be a saint that she makes superhuman efforts to restrain herself.

At the church of S. Mamede she is greatly esteemed.

Rita is already known as a painter at S. Luiz and at Corpo Santo. I believe she is going to get a commission from father Paulo, some pictures.

Madame Souza was very poorly in the summer and told me she had burnt your little letters, because she thought she was dying and, as she has no family, she did not want to leave anything behind.

[6v] She always asks a lot about you and whether you are coming here this winter?

Forgive this rambling.

Desculpa este desalinhavado.

I shall send you the account one day.

Hei-de mandar-te a conta um dia.

Tell aunt Emilia and Margarida that if they want to live very happily they should come to Fatima.

I have no time for more today; give my best regards to your grandmother, aunts and cousin and many to your father; I wish with all my heart for your grandmother's complete recovery.

Accept many very tight hugs from one who is and will be as long as she lives your true friend

Acceita muitos abraços apertadissimos de quem é e será emquanto viva, tua verdadeira amiga

2 Deve tratar-se de Regina Ferreira, referida no Doc. 69, de 13 de Outubro de 1917, nota 19.
3 In Doc. 69, of 13 October 1917, fol. 5, an Emília is mentioned immediately after Regina. It is the same person: Father Francisco dos Santos Costa, a native of Rodrigos, assures us that she was Emília and not Emiliania. It was therefore an error by the author of this letter. Emília was a housemaid of Isabel da Nóbrega Machado, a friend of Fernanda Guiot Correia Basto.

15 From the text of Doc. 69, of 13 October 1917 and Doc. 104, of 17 October 1917, it cannot be gathered that Bettina Basto saw Our Lady, but in Doc. 69 (fol. 10v) she drew a drawing with a silhouette which, in 1978, she explained to us was the figure of Our Lady as she imagined it.
