Lisbôa.

I hope with all my heart that you are in good health, and your good parents too. The purpose of this letter is to ask for your news, and to ask you to be so kind as to tell me whether your Cousin Jacintha is a little better, for I heard that she was very poorly, which made me very sad. They also tell me that your cousin has died*, can it be true? He went to heaven, Our Lady wanted him for herself. [1v] You cannot imagine, my dear girl, how grateful I would be if you would give me your news and tell me what has been happening there, whether there is hope of our having the chapel there, whether miracles have taken place, in short everything you can tell me. How sorry I am, my little Lúcia, not to know you, and that those places are so far away from me!! Since I was there on the 13th of October, a day of such [2] great happiness for me, I often meditate on it, and seem to see our dear mother of heaven and that whole place, to which I long with all my soul to return one day. As in small places there are sometimes no stamps, I am sending one, and paper for my dear child to write to me, hoping you will forgive me, yes? One more question: they say that your cousin is bringing up pus from her chest; who knows whether she might need

to be treated [2v] in some hospital; there is a girl here being treated in the hospital who is from Villa Nova de Orem, and it seems she is getting better; I saw her there by chance when I went to visit another patient. I am beginning to be a bore, forgive me.

My dear girl, pray hard in your prayers for a nephew of mine, José, will you? That our dear Mother of heaven may protect him, delivering him from all dangers (of which, unfortunately, there are so many here), and that he may study hard, for he has to take exams next month. Do this for me with all your heart, will you? For Our Lady will refuse you nothing. I still hope [top margin of fol. 2v, crosswise] one day to thank you in person.

Receive an embrace from one who is with all her heart your little friend. I am the friend of Senhora Dona Virginia6, and I already wrote to you long ago.
