Maria Rosa dos Santos
As soon as the news began to spread that Our Lady had appeared to the said children on the thirteenth of May, and I came to know of it, which was about fifteen days later, I sent for the mother of the seer Lúcia to come to my house, the parish residence, and to bring her daughter with her. The mother came with the daughter, but very distressed, believing, she says, that it is all a lie; she orders her daughter to take back what she had said, for such a lie would be a great evil. She threatens her, and says she has already threatened her daughter with many things that will befall her if she goes on saying that she saw Our Lady, and lying. She complains that such things had to happen to her of all people, etc., etc.
I try to calm the distressed mother, telling her that, if what they say is true, it is a great glory for her and her family. Oh!!... if it is true... but what if it is a lie?!... exclaims the doubting mother. I advise her to go on taking the same care of her daughter as she always has; when the time comes for the girl to go to the place of the Apparition, she should neither send her nor stop her; and she should always bring her to me, but only after the day of the Apparition, if the girl says she still has the grace of seeing Our Lady. She promised to do all this, and even offered to bring her daughter to me the day before, or two days before, so that I could tell her anything the girl should do or say at the time of the Apparition. I talked her out of this, to avoid giving the impious or the ill-intentioned grounds for a bad opinion – which they formed all the same.
