Dear Fernanda
Querida Fernanda
I never thought I would be able to see a miracle, and you have no idea of the impression it made on me.
We left here on Thursday for Torres Novas, then we got into a carriage to go as far as the town, then we got on donkeys as far as [1v] Rodrigo, which is a little village where some people Belinha7 knows live; we spent the whole day on this journey, because
everything is very far; we stayed there, and on Saturday, at 1h in the morning8, we left for Fátima in a carriage (or rather a cart), in which we were jolted about the whole way — don't think it's near, for we only got there at half past 10 — and it had been raining since 4; we didn't have a dry thread left on us, but none of that matters, because what we then witnessed I shall never again see. I have never seen so many people. Now ima-[2]gine all those people praying the rosary and then singing, all in the rain. At noon the little shepherdess arrives and asks them to close their umbrellas; at that very instant the rain stops, and we see the clouds draw apart, and the sun appears to us without brilliance and white, and in the middle a cross like a host*; then the clouds turn golden, and one sees passing, like a very transparent cloud, the figure of Our Lady; the clouds turn blue, purple and green; the sun seems to come loose from the sky, it spins on itself and disappears, only to appear to us again immediately afterwards, shining as usual; [2v] the clouds move on and it turns into a lovely afternoon. Isn't it extraordinary? This is the main thing; I'll tell you about the other incidents later.
I miss her a lot already; she must be so sweet!
Já tenho bastantes saudades dela deve estar tão engraçada!
Much love to everyone, and from this your very, very loving sister
