Dear Editor of O MENSAGEIRO: May I ask you the great kindness of publishing the following in your esteemed and widely read newspaper:

TO BELIEVERS AND NON-BELIEVERS

AOS CRENTES E NÃO CRENTES

With all the revulsion of a Catholic priest's heart, I wish to make plain and to declare before all who have heard, or may yet hear, the rumour — all the more defamatory and repugnant for being dangerous to my life and my dignity as parish priest — that I was an accomplice in the sudden snatching of the little children who say they see Our Lady, away from the authority of their parents and from the satisfaction of 5 to 6 thousand people (according to the estimates) who, many of them from so many leagues* away and at enormous sacrifice, had come to see them, speak to them and hear them speak — I say, I wish to repel so unjust and insidious a calumny, proclaiming to the whole world that I took no part, however small, directly or indirectly, in so odious and sacrilegious an act.

The administrator did not confide to me the secret of his intentions.

And if it was Providential — as it was — that the official took the children away stealthily and with no chance of resistance, no less Providential was the calming of spirits excited by the diabolical rumour; otherwise this parish would today be mourning the loss of its parish priest.

But once again the devil's snare failed to wound me mortally, thanks, certainly, to Divine Providence.

The official, after questioning the little children at length in their homes, had them brought to my house, for the purpose of inquiries — so he says, so that they would disclose to them a secret they had not until then revealed to him — and from there, at a moment he thought opportune, he had them get into the carriage and, telling the parents and bystanders that he was taking them to the place of the apparitions, sets off at full gallop for Vila Nova d'Ourem.

With what aim did he choose my house? To escape the wrath his act would provoke? So that the people would rise up, as they did rise up, against me as an accomplice?

For... some other aim?...

Para...outro fim?...

I do not know! But all I know is that I detest such conduct and that God will always watch over his own.

No one can put obstacles in the way of the works of God. The children were not needed, say thousands of witnesses, to reveal the secret of the Queen of the Fields; it is the witnesses themselves who attest to the extraordinary facts and phenomena which they saw, and which have rooted that belief ever more deeply.

Now it is not the children; it is the enormous mass of people of all classes and conditions who have come from all parts of the country.

If my absence as parish priest from the place of the Apparition was felt by the believers, my presence would have been felt no less by the unbelievers, to the discredit of the truth of the facts.

The Virgin Mother does not need the presence of the parish priest to show her goodness, and it is necessary that the enemies of religion should not be able to

tarnish the brilliance of Her Benevolence by attributing the belief of the people to the presence or counsel of the parish priest, because faith is a Gift of God and not of priests; — that is the true reason for my absence and apparent indifference in so sublime and marvellous a matter: — that is why I have not given my clear opinion in answer to the thousand questions and letters that have been addressed to me. — The enemy does not sleep. — He roars like a lion. Were not the Apostles the first to announce the Resurrection of the Son of the Virgin?

I refrain from narrating what took place at the place of the Apparitions before the more or less clear gaze of the 5 to 6 thousand people, because by this time the world press will certainly have done so.

Thanking you for publishing this, I remain, with esteem, etc.

Agradecendo a publicação desta, subscrevo-me, com estima, etc.
