O CASO DE FÁTIMA
It has been the subject that has held everyone's attention all week.
Tem sido o assumpto que tem prendido todas as attenções durante a semana.
Is this really an apparition of the Virgin to three children, to one of whom She is said to have spoken in particular?
Trata-se realmente da apparição da Virgem a tres creanças, a uma das quaes Ella se dirigiria especialmente?
The apparitions, if they were real, had been recurring on the 13th of every month since May, and the one on the 13th of this month had been announced as the last, and was to be accompanied by miraculous phenomena.

It was pouring with rain. At the hour announced for the apparition, the rain stops, as if obeying the voice of the children, who said there was no need to keep the umbrellas open.
Chovia torrencialmente. Á hora annunciada para a apparição a chuva cessa, como que obedecendo á voz das creanças que disseram não ser necessario conservar abertos os guarda-chuvas.
The sun comes out and takes on a strange light, so that it can be gazed at like the full moon. The light passes through various gradations: at times the solar globe seems to be surrounded by a halo of flames, at other times it seems a metallic disc, as if of silver. The disc is seen spinning rapidly on itself, and one has the impression that it is leaving its orbit and coming closer to the earth, giving off an exceptional heat.
O sol descobre-se, fica com uma luz estranha, podendo ser fitado como a lua cheia. A luz passa por diversas gradações, parecendo umas vezes que o globo solar é cercado d'uma aureola de chammas, outras vezes um disco metallico como de prata. Vê-se o disco girar sobre si mesmo rapidamente e tem-se a impressão de que elle se desloca da sua orbita e se aproxima da terra, produzindo um calor excepcional.
No one in good faith disputes this. We have heard it from eyewitnesses, and letters from the neighbourhood of Fátima confirm it.
Isto ninguem de boa fé o contesta. A testemunhas oculares o ouvimos e cartas vindas das proximidades de Fátima o confirmam.
A natural phenomenon, which will recur under identical atmospheric conditions?
Phenomeno natural, que se reproduzirá em identicas condições atmosphericas?
Electrical phenomena, as some claim?
Phenomenos electricos, como pretendem alguns?
We do not know, nor is it our place to pronounce on so delicate a matter.
Não sabemos nem nos cumpre a nós pronunciar-nos sobre tão melindroso assumpto.
Be that as it may, it is well worth pondering that the phenomenon occurred on the very day and at the very hour for which miraculous phenomena had been announced, a month in advance, by three uneducated children, incapable of foreseeing phenomena that, for that matter, no man of science foresaw.
Seja como fôr, é caso muito para meditar este de se produzir o phenomeno no dia e á hora precisos em que phenomenos miraculosos foram annunciados, a um mez d'antecedencia, por tres creanças rudes, incapazes de prever phenomenos que aliás nenhum homem de sciencia previu.
Also worth pondering is the fact that three children, the eldest of whom is 10 years old, when questioned by various people about the apparitions of the Virgin, never contradict themselves and never stop insisting on the truth of what they say they saw, resisting suggestions to the contrary, promises of money and even threats.
Tambem é para meditar a circumstancia de tres creanças, a mais velha das quaes conta 10 annos, interrogadas por diversas pessoas sobre as apparições da Virgem, nunca se contradizerem, nunca deixarem de insistir sobre a verdade do que dizem ter visto, resistindo a insinuações em sentido contrario, a promessas de dinheiro e até a ameaças.
The power of God is infinite; miracles have happened, and they can happen and happen again.
O poder de Deus é infinito, os milagres têm-se dado, podem dar-se e repetir se.
It is for the ecclesiastical authority to pronounce on what has occurred, with the careful deliberation it always applies in similar cases.
Á auctoridade ecclesiastica cumpre pronunciar-se sobre o occorrido com aquella ponderação que emprega sempre em casos identicos.
Until that happens, we will not cast doubt on what thousands of people affirm they saw (for that would be to deny the evidence), but neither will we say that there was a miracle, nor that there was not. We are sons of the Church and will submit to whatever its lawful representatives say on this matter.
Emquanto isso se não der, nós, sem pormos em duvida o que milhares de pessoas affirmam ter visto (porque isso seria negar a evidencia), não diremos que houve milagre nem que o não houve. Somos filhos da Egreja e submeter-nos-emos ao que a este respeito fôr dito pelos seus legitimos representantes.
Neither hasty nor stubborn.
Nem precipitados nem contumazes.
