I declare, and together with me several persons of distinction with whom I have spoken and whose illustrious names I can cite, that we deliberately observed the sun several times, and for set periods, in order to make quite sure of the truth of the facts; but we saw nothing abnormal after the miraculous phenomenon. That the miracle took place is certain, quite certain; thousands of people affirm it, not only rough and naive peasants, but highly educated people who know the laws of nature well, and who with a unanimous cry of reverence fell to their knees proclaiming the grandeur of the miracle without the slightest doubt.
If it were some cosmic phenomenon, would it not already have been foreseen and announced by the learned men who devote themselves to the science of the stars? And yet there was not the slightest notice of it from the month of the Virgin, which was when the extraordinary events began to take place on every thirteenth of each month, until now, in the month of the Rosary, which was when these miraculous manifestations ended, announced in advance by little Lucia.
I (modesty aside), who am not altogether stupid or ignorant, who went there full of curiosity but without faith in the apparition, with my soul perfectly
indifferent to the grandeur of the mystery, deaf to the voice of the inspired child who bade us in the name of Our Lady to look at the sun, fearing to damage or lose my sight by doing so, as is the general belief, I resisted the suggestion; and only after everyone around me, with ecstatic exclamations, had aroused my curiosity to look, did I brave the selfish fear of losing my sight, and then I looked; and, Blessed be God! I saw! I saw what thousands of people were contemplating!
The rain, which had fallen all night and all morning, fine, persistent and tiresome, completely covering the sky with a grey mantle, suddenly stopped at the hour announced by the little shepherds; the clouds began to tear apart and to open (allow me the comparison) as if it were the curtain of a theatre, to reveal the sun darting and casting its luminous rays on the place where the prophetic children were in ecstasy.
The sun then had the appearance of a globe of dull silver, surrounded by a purplish disc, very dark, as when eclipses are not entirely total.
Then a marvellous thing was seen! The sun spinning hurriedly as if it were a firework wheel: this prodigy was repeated three times in succession.
The prodigy announced by the little ones was taking place, so that all should believe in the apparition of Our Lady!
Then the clouds gradually disappeared from the firmament, which remained clear, serene and blue, as there is none to equal that of this beautiful Portuguese land of ours.
I looked around; the appearance and colours of the landscape were the same as those observed during an eclipse; the same bluish light, sui generis, of that very special electric blue peculiar to phenomena of this nature.
To show clearly how much I avoided letting myself be influenced by suggestion, I will say further that the yellow, red and purple colours that many people said they had seen when they lowered their eyes on to the landscape, or on to the handkerchiefs that the emotion of our tears obliged us to raise to our eyes, were nothing more than the result of our staring at the sun with the naked eye, which always happens in identical circumstances.
On the grandeur of the spectacle, the beauties of the landscape, the imposing sight of the multitude, on the tenderness caused by the devotion of so many believing souls, singing in chorus the Ave, the Credo, the Tantum Ergo, the fervent prayers to the Virgin Our Lady of the Rosary.

Tambem do nosso presado collega A Liberdade, do Porto, recortamos o seguinte:
We arrived at the place [...] Father José Antonio Marques da Cruz Curado.
Chegámos ao local [...] Padre José Antonio Marques da Cruz Curado.
Having made this publication and transcription, we shall observe that these new documents do not for the present advance the study of the question very much.
That the effects of the sun on the 13th seemed marvellous and strongly impressed the multitude, we already noted in the articles of the 16th and 17th.
And there we also pointed out the coincidence of the phenomenon taking place on the day and at the hour announced (with a difference of only a few moments), and of the rain, which until then had been falling for hours on end with a persistence fit to try one's patience, stopping at that moment.
That, however, is not the point of disagreement.
Where it lies is in the following:
Onde elle reside é no seguinte:
Should the phenomena verified and described by the people who were at Fátima be deemed supernatural?
Or do they have a natural explanation?
Ou teem explicação natural?
Or are they even commonly observed, given certain favourable circumstances in the sky, as seemed to us to result from Sunday's observation?
This is the capital point on which we should very much like the opinion of competent persons.
And there are other points that it would be very useful to clear up, such as those relating to the attitude and sayings of the three shepherds, which we have heard reported in the most varied ways.
Further still, and above all:
Mais ainda, e principalmente:
And we have further heard that on each of those days marvellous signs have been observed in the sky.
There must certainly be various trustworthy witnesses, whose depositions we should very much like to have, and which we shall go on recording as space permits.

Editorial Note. — The Rev. Parish Priest of Fátima informs us that the ecclesiastical authority is already inquiring into the events that occurred in that locality in order, in due course, to pronounce on the nature of the happenings. Furthermore, he informs us that the children, contrary to what some newspapers reported, are alive and in good health.
