FANATICISM IN ACTION THE "MIRACLE" OF FÁTIMA
O FANATISMO EM ACÇÃO O "MILAGRE" DA FÁTIMA
Despite all the propaganda that has been made about it, it is possible that not all our readers are yet duly enlightened about that miraculous case of the apparition of Our Lady, over there towards Fátima, in the council of Vila Nova de Ourem; and since this may be so, besides the fact that it is a fact truly among the most notable to have occurred lately in, so to speak, the whole world, and therefore worthy of the greatest publicity, we have thought of contributing to its widest dissemination by reproducing in the columns of the Semana the words that the stupendous case drew from one of its eyewitnesses — namely Mr João Pereira Novo — and which were inserted by the Mensagemiro on the second page of its issue of 22 August last.
It is true that the same newspaper, in spite of all its Catholicism, and of having at least four priests on its editorial staff4, does not give what could be called absolute credit to the deposition of the poor man (poor is a manner of speaking like any other, because we do not know him and are therefore unaware, as a
consequence, whether he gets along with difficulty or without it). And right from the start the otherwise so pious sheet shows its reservations about what is, to all appearances, so unimpeachable a testimony regarding the miracle of Fátima. Thus the Mensagemiro not only heads with distrust the two columns and a bit that it devotes to the subject — Miraculous apparition?, it asks itself — but goes on covering itself in advance, saying, for example, that we must not pronounce our judgement (on the apparition of the Virgin, of course), and that each one will interpret as he ... sees fit the letter in which this supernatural occurrence is related.
But let us get to the transcription of the sensational document. The Mensagemiro confesses that its signatory is a man of scant letters (it not only had to alter the punctuation scattered through his sayings, but the very spelling of some of his words); what it did not say, however, nor could say, is that the good man (another hallowed phrase; for all we know he may be a dove-like heart or the most poisoned soul in this world) is estranged from the good old epistolary practices. For he begins thus:
Friend and Mr Coelho, in the first place I very much hope that this letter of mine finds you enjoying perfect health in the company of Mrsa Glória and all the rest of the family, as I and all my family remain in perfect health, thank God.
Amigo e sr.
Then, entering upon the description of the events he witnessed on the 13th at Fátima, the author of the interesting missive tells Mr Coelho and Mrsa. Glória, and her sisters too, who had so begged him to inform them on the matter:
I saw there an altar on a holm oak and a great many people praying; as they arrived so they prayed without ever ceasing to pray. I never saw so many people together nor so many carriages from the direction of Torres Novas and of Ourem. They came fifteen and twenty carriages together without being able to pass one another.
Thus far, nothing new, as can be seen. But...
At the time when the children were about to leave their parents' house accompanied by some priests who had been questioning them, (Poor children! What torments they went through!)5 there suddenly appeared at the door a closed carriage with the administrator inside and a certain gentleman they say is a Carbonário. The two take hold of the children, saying: girls, come along, let's go, it's time, and the children declined the favour, saying: we are going on foot in the company of these people. And the said gentlemen say: no, no, girls, today is a feast day, I would like you to go by carriage. Upon this they take hold of the children, put them in the carriage, turn the horses round and make off with the children to Ourem.
After such an outrage by the administrative authority, the people, of course, were disappointed and wept a great deal, and a motor car went straight after the carriage to see if it could bring back the children, which it did not manage to do. Meanwhile...:
Entretanto...:
The people who had gone there last month encouraged them again, saying: pray, pray and pay attention, for it is not five minutes to the hour of last month.
And here we come to the best part of the feast:
E eis-nos chegados ao melhor da festa:
The people fell silent. The weather was clear. Then suddenly a flash of lightning formed from the sky over the altar and made a whirlwind round the altar that covered more than three hundred people with earth. Everyone fled and fell and wept. The earth rumbled, and very loudly, the stones changed colour, and then a great many people began to shout: look, look, look, there comes Our Lady, see, in a white dress! Those who saw her on the earth were many, but those who saw her in the sky were many more, and more than three thousand people saw no more because when the earth rumbled and the stones changed colour, of all those who were closest, some fell, others got upset, and I too was so flustered that, from wanting to see so much, I saw little. But what I, and all those who were left sobbing, did still see very well was arches and garlands in the sky on the south side, with flowers of every colour.
And the man of the epistle says they saw little! What more extraordinary things would his eyes not then have observed, if the earth had not rumbled and some had not fallen, others had not got upset, and he too had not been so flustered on that occasion?!
But he was not going [to] forget the trick the administrative authority had played on them. It is true that it was not necessary for the children to be present for the whole enormous pilgrimage to witness all that has been narrated, to which, to complete the picture, this so curious detail must be added: that if Our Lady did not speak, it was because she had no one to answer her...
However...
No entanto...
After all the people had seen and recovered their siria, (sic) they said to one another: let's get together with all these people and go to Ourem and make fresh meat. Since they have stolen our neighbours from us, we are going there to fetch them.
We do not know whether, after filling themselves up again with siria (what devil of a creature can this be!), the men of the pilgrimage to Fátima, the men and the women — yes, because the womenfolk must have entered in great numbers into the performance — did or did not go to Ourem to carry out the bloodbath spoken of in the letter whose essential points we have just transcribed; but even if they did not carry out their intentions, the fact of their having thought of it is enough to prove eloquently the criminal excesses to which religious fanaticism can give rise when it is in any way thwarted in the exaggerations of its most lamentable outbursts.
And it demonstrates at the same time how much need and urgency there is to fight this evil by every means, today when reaction, by every means too, is spreading its black tentacles, seeking to wrap up and suffocate in them the whole of Portuguese society.
