We have two faithful copies of this document; we do not know where the original is today. The author sent this letter to Fr. Gélase. Fr. João José Cruz, C. S. Sp.*, who used the pseudonym "J. Castelbranco", learned that the document existed and asked Fr. Gélase for it; Fr. Gélase sent it on 28 August 1941. Fr. J. Castelbranco thanked him in a letter of 2 September. Finding the letter interesting, he sent it to Dom José Alves Correia da Silva, Bishop of Leiria, on 11 September 1941.
The second copy, which belongs to the Fonseca Archive and is kept in Braga, was also sent by Fr. J. Castelbranco and is likewise authenticated. Fr. Fonseca, in his booklet Fátima e a Crítica, offprint of the review "Brotéria", Lisbon, 1951, p. 15, note 1, changed the date from 31 to 13 October.

My Reverend Father,
Espinho, le 31 Octobre 1917
Mon Réverend Père,
How can I thank you for your two kind letters?
I see with such gratitude that you have the kindness to continue to take a little interest in my family and in me; I beg you, please always pray for us and above all for my dear husband, whose departure for France is approaching so rapidly. His leave will end on 10 Nov. and after that he may expect to leave at any moment. It is then that he will need your good prayers even more, and I count on them, Father. I know that I can count on them, can I not?
At the moment we are not in Lisbon; for a week we have been at Espinho, a seaside resort in the North of the Country, not far from Porto. My parents-in-law have a villa there, and we shall stay with them until 6 or 7 Nov. Then we shall return to Lisbon, and José is to go to Paris to join the Director of the "Villa St Jean",3 who has sent me word that he would gladly take José from Paris to Fribourg, as he himself is to be in Paris from 10 to 20 Nov. From Lisbon to Paris it is not very difficult to find someone to entrust José to; the hardest part was finding someone to take him from Paris to Switzerland. It is terribly hard for me to part from my child, but I recognise that he must go back to school; his holidays have already lasted far too long. When he is in Fribourg his aunt and Gertrude will certainly stay at the Hôtel de Rome as they did last year; he will be able to go and see them almost every day, and I shall be reassured knowing that he has these two devoted people near him.
My daughter and I will probably stay in Lisbon during the winter, and then... I do not know; I cannot make any plans4, the future is so uncertain! I know very well that it is always uncertain, but at this moment more than ever. If only this horrible war would end! Then Antonio would quickly come and join us, and I think that in that case I would go with him to Africa. Do you think, Father, that the war will go on for a long time yet?
I should like to tell you about an extraordinary event which took place at Fatima, a tiny Portuguese village in the central provinces, but I do not know whether I shall have time today. I am writing this letter while I have a little time alone in the house; Antonio and José went off early in the morning to shoot wild duck. My son does not yet shoot very well, but it seems he shows great aptitude. As for his father, I believe I have already told you that he is a keen hunter and a first-rate shot. Eugenia and her grandfather have gone for a walk together; my mother-in-law has gone to pay some visits; and I, being a little tired today, have stayed at home and taken the opportunity to write to you.
But let me see whether I can tell you about the marvellous events that everyone is talking about so much. I should very much like to know what you think of them. As soon as I arrived in Lisbon I was told of the marvellous apparition of the Blessed Virgin to 3 little shepherds, two little girls of 10 and 7 and a little boy of about the same age. These children related that one day when they were minding their sheep on the mountain, they had heard something like a clap of thunder and, fearing a storm, had begun to gather the flock to go home. Then they had seen a "Lady" of great beauty who had said to them: "Fear nothing, I am from heaven, come to this same place on the 13th of each month (it was then 13 May); I shall appear to you, and in 6 months, on 13 Oct., I shall show a sign so that everyone may believe in me".
These children went and told what they had seen, and the following month they went to the same place, already accompanied by many people, and at the hour of noon they are as if transfigured; they are seen addressing someone whom nobody sees, they are seen moving their lips, but what they say is not heard. Only everyone feels that one must kneel and pray. After a few minutes the children get up, say that the Blessed Virgin has gone and that she said that one must pray much and do penance. The next
L'autre
month the same scene is repeated, only each time there are more people. Finally in the month of Sept. the local authorities do not let the children go to the place of the miracle, as everyone calls it. The children are held by the mayor*, who asks them a thousand questions to trip them up in their answers; they are threatened with prison; in short, they are tormented in every way, but the poor little ones always say the same thing: "We see a 'Lady', she tells us to pray and to tell everyone to do penance, and that on 13 Oct. everyone will believe." Despite the children's absence many people go to the usual place of the apparition; no one sees anything, but at noon one feels there something like a supernatural presence that compels one to pray.
At last, as 13 Oct. was approaching and I had a great desire, an immense desire, to go to Fatima, the place of the miracle, we arranged, my sister, some cousins and some friends, to go all together. There is no railway as far as the village, and from the village itself to the place of the apparition it is still quite far. So we hired a large motor car and set off bravely from Lisbon at 2 o'clock in the morning, so as to be at the appointed place at noon. We travelled all night, and at 10 o'clock we were at the place of the apparition. There was already an enormous crowd waiting; it has been calculated that more than 50,000 people were there. All through the night and the morning we had met hundreds of carriages, people on foot, on horseback, on donkeys, in short every possible vehicle; and I assure you there were some truly prehistoric ones. It made one laugh a little, but at the same time it was touching to see so many people heading for the same place to attend the apparition of the Virgin. I kept saying that this in itself was already a real miracle: at the voice of these poor children so many thousands of people were leaving their homes, their business, to hasten there, pray and sing hymns. It was pouring with rain, a rain such as we do not often have in October, when the weather is still so fine; and yet not a single person complained; there we were in the rain, waiting! One heard something like the sound of the sea, and it was all those people praying aloud and singing hymns.
At last at noon a great murmur and cheering are heard. It was the children arriving, accompanied by the local doctor, who has taken them under his protection. The parish priest and the other priests of the neighbouring parishes are not there. The Bishop has forbidden the ecclesiastical authorities to involve themselves in anything, for fear that the government, which is always quick to persecute religion, might say that this is the priests' scheming. Not one Catholic newspaper has spoken of the apparitions; it is the republican and anti-religious newspapers that have made a great noise about these events and sent their reporters to the spot. I am sending you an "Illustração Portuguesa" with photographs of the main scenes that took place. This "Illustração" is as irreligious as can be, and yet the article on the apparitions is very well written and without a trace of mockery. The writer relates what he saw, and at the end he says: "now let science and the Church discover what is genuine in the phenomenon I saw."
But I was telling you about the moment when the children arrived at the place where the Blessed Virgin appears to them. This place is marked by a rustic altar topped by a cross, with two lamps burning; it is near an olive tree*, or rather it was an olive tree, but nothing remains of it now but a stump almost level with the ground; people have torn off the leaves, the branches, everything, out of devotion.
Father, it is exactly noon, and the rain, which was falling in torrents, suddenly stops; the children are kneeling near the cross and praying, their little faces transfigured and covered with tears. Then all of a sudden a clamour is heard rising from thousands of mouths; all the people cry out: "Miracle, miracle, praised be Jesus Christ, praised be the Most Holy Virgin". And the sun, which can be looked at directly and which looks like a metal disc without rays, begins to turn on itself and to rise and fall several times. That is what was being said beside me, and what thousands of people affirm they saw. I myself did not see it; I was indeed able to look straight at the sun, and I was
terribly moved to hear everyone proclaim that extraordinary signs could be seen in the sky. I believe that Our Lord did not find me worthy to see these phenomena, but in my soul I had no need to see them in order to believe in the apparition of the Blessed Virgin to the children. Two of my cousins who were near me were beside themselves and affirmed that they saw the sun exactly like a firework spinning dizzily. Well, this lasted a few minutes, then the clouds covered the sun again; the children got up and the whole crowd rushed at them to hear them speak.
I was able to see from afar one of the little girls in the arms of a gentleman. I did not hear what she was saying, but it was reported that she said this: "The Blessed Virgin has blessed everyone, she wants people to pray, to do penance and to build at this spot a chapel in honour of the Virgin of the Rosary.
The alms are so abundant that the chapel is going to be started straight away, and this spot, utterly unknown a few months ago, has suddenly become famous. As I told you, more than 50,000 people were gathered there on 13 Oct.; and all those people left happy and convinced that the Blessed Virgin had deigned to come down for a moment upon our poor Portugal. I, for my part, am sure of it. Tell me, Father, what you make of all this. I am happy to have been able to witness such a manifestation of faith and religion.
Near me an old peasant kept crying out: "Blessed Virgin, my son, my little child, meu filhinho in Portuguese;" It is an expression that cannot be translated well, but it is so touching; no doubt his son is at the war, and the poor old man, feeling the Blessed Virgin so close, was asking her to protect him. You can well imagine that I too prayed for my Antonio, the children and all those who are dear to me, among whom you will allow me to count you, will you not? I shall never be able to forget how good you have been
and helpful and full of patience in always putting up with me. Now I should very much like to have your opinion on all this that I have told you in a French that is certainly not very classical but which, I hope, you will understand. If I could go and see you and talk to you for a moment, what happiness that would be for me. I have had to interrupt my letter several times. Here we are already at 5 Nov. today. The day after tomorrow we are to return to Lisbon, rua das Janelas Verdes, 56. My sisters and Gertrude write that it is already so cold in Switzerland and that there is no coal to heat the houses. Here the weather is still so fine and the temperature so pleasant; we are still wearing our summer clothes. ....
Goodbye, Father; it is a great consolation for me to think that you are praying for us all, and above all for my Antonio; your prayers will be answered, I firmly hope so.
Please bless me and believe me always your most respectfully devoted and grateful
Veuillez me bénir et me croire toujours votre bien respectueusement dévouée et reconnaissante.
