Most Excellent and Most Reverend Sir

Ex.mo e Rev.mo Snr

Deeply obliged, I thank Your Excellency for your letter, which I greatly appreciate.

Like all Catholics, I was revolted by the impious, savage and infamous act of the sectarians of hell who went to Fátima to commit such an outrage*. Our Lord permitted this so that the miracle might be all the more confirmed by faith, which keeps growing in the supernatural events of Fátima; but would it be a sin to feel a certain regret that God did not strike them down there and then with a thunderbolt of His Wrath?

[1v] As Your Excellency takes such an interest in the Apparition of Fatima, and I do too, allow me to tell you what I heard here today. A few days ago a gentleman from here and his wife, people of standing and good principles, went to visit the place of the Apparition. There were a good many people there praying, and little Lucia was there, but it made a bad impression to see her with a money box asking for alms. It may perhaps be for building the chapel, but if so she is not authorised to ask, and she is doing it without [2] the authorisation of the parish priest, who I know has been forbidden by the Patriarch* to accept alms for the chapel4. And as Lucia's father is an alcoholic and has little faith,

there remains the suspicion that he is using the little girl to exploit the true devotees of Our Lady. It would be a good thing if that child could be taken from her parents and entrusted to some truly pious person who would bring her up and keep her out of the public eye. The same family from here who told of the money box also said that the little girl had not made a good impression on them when answering the questions put to her, reciting everything like [2v] a barrel organ or a repeater watch*.

She seemed to be repeating a lesson she had been taught, without any real feeling of piety and without a true awareness of the grace received.

This made me sad.

Fez-me isto tristeza.

I hope we shall be able to leave here for Castello Branco on Saturday the 10th of this month. My husband has improved a great deal here and sends his compliments to Your Excellency
