IMPRESSIVE NOTES
NOTAS IMPRESSIVAS
Fátima 13 November 1917
Fátima 13 de Novembro de 1917
Today it is precisely one month since tens of thousands of people, drawn by the repeated promises of three rough and uncouth children, gathered on the Heath of Fátima.
I too went there; not that I was spurred on by the lively enthusiasm of an inner conviction that the announced portentous events would come to pass, but because the gratitude owed to an obliging and signal kindness compelled me to go.
Tambem eu lá fui; não que me estimulasse o entusiasmo vivo d’uma convicção interna na realização annunciada de factos portentosos, mas porque a ir me obrigava a gratidão devida a gentileza penhorante e insigne.
The 13th of October had dawned rainy and harsh, but the whirlwind of violent wind, accompanied by heavy showers, was not enough to overcome the sincere faith of some and the ardent curiosity of others.
Along the long road I met tens, hundreds, thousands of people who, lashed by the stormy gale, without a gesture of annoyance, without a flagging of spirit, went on along the flooded road in search of the place where prodigious events are said to have already occurred, and where others were to take place on this day. The gravity and the com-
posure that shone through on every face were a sure guarantee of the fervent belief that drove many, and of the respect that this naive and pure belief imposed on all.
On reaching the theatre of the resounding events, I was vividly impressed by the enormous crowd, reckoned at many thousands of people, which was massed together with an order, a respect, a composure that were moving.
Unable to force my way through to the famous holm-oak shrub, which seems to have served as a throne for the Heavenly Vision, I stayed on the road at a spot from which everything could be well observed.
Voices could be heard as far as where I was, distinct echoes of religious hymns in which the multitude was strengthening its faith while the solemn hour for which thousands of hearts were yearning had not yet come.
The three children had just arrived, uncouth and rough protagonists of the most grandiose and extraordinary spectacle that it has yet been granted me to witness. The august moment was approaching. The impertinent rain eased off, and to the north a limpid blue can be made out in a strip of sky breaking through the leaden clouds.
It occurred to my mind, already moved by what I was witnessing, that it might well be that that misty morning, with its sky heavy with greyish clouds, was the mise-en-scène of a grandiose spectacle that was about to take place.
On the clock the hand slowly marked 2 o'clock; and meanwhile the multitude waited in anxious recollection for the marvellous event that was to reinvigorate its faith.
Already in some candid souls the fear was arising that the announced event would not take place, when suddenly that whole immense multitude, at the voice of the seer, stirred in a meaningful hubbub of astonishment and amazement, and raised its head to the sky, where thousands of eyes contemplated, aghast, the sun in the full blue, visible to all, without the intensity of its rays wounding the retina and hindering vision, crowned with various colours, in a movement of swift rotation, seeming at times to come loose from the vault of heaven, approaching the earth.
The spectators, looking at one another, appeared to each other yellow in colour, and on the horizon, orange-red, wherever
the eyes were fixed, shafts of faded light could be seen, taking an oval shape, seeming to be placed at equal distances, and reflected on the ground.
Such was the surprising phenomenon which everyone had occasion to observe, and which drew from some a sincere confession of ardent faith, and threw others, in whom the scorching wind of scepticism had withered the flower of belief, into a benevolent expectancy.
What, then, is it all about?
De qué se trata pois?
It is beyond doubt that we are in the presence of events which deeply moved the multitudes; many not hesitating to classify them as a miracle.
Will it be one?
Se-lo-ha?
It would be rash to affirm it. Nevertheless it is certain that, by sound criticism, in assessing the facts we cannot and must not separate them from the circumstances which preceded, accompanied and followed them. Granting for argument's sake that in the case of Fátima everything is explained by natural causes, one circumstance is enough to give it the standing of the marvellous: its having been announced for a fixed day and hour six months in advance, and again on the day itself.
Coincidence?
Coincidencia?
But would not such a coincidence of an event announced so far in advance and so firmly be admirable and surprising?
The events produced at Fátima had public places for their theatre, and for their spectators people of all social conditions, innumerable multitudes drawn there by three children of almost savage rusticity, and numerous and fierce enemies.
And yet, if not all confessed themselves believers, all showed themselves overcome before the power that worked such a prodigy.
On the greater number, without study, without science, the supernatural imposed itself with an unshakeable conviction, which is mystical certainty, which demands only good faith: and which leads the upright man of sound judgement to exclaim: Digitus Dei est hic.
That is why human languages, mysterious organs of truth, have given a significant name to the act by which God exercises His sovereignty over nature and instantly manifests His presence to men; they call it a miracle, that is, the admirable act par excellence, the act which constitutes the public power of God.
To those on whose lips these considerations may perhaps bring a faint laugh, I will say that we know the truth not only by reason but also by the heart. Beside reason, from which philosophy proceeds, there is nature, which expresses itself through the voice of instinct, of feeling or of the heart. Feeling is an echo of reason which sometimes, because it echoes in the innermost recesses of the soul, makes itself heard better than reason itself. When one speaks of the light of the heart, one designates, without realising it, the light of spontaneous reason, which reveals the truth to us with a living and pure intuition, diametrically opposed to the slow and laborious processes of reflective reason and of reasoning.
And to those who, making a proud display of their science, mock the simple and naive belief of the people, I will say: Princes of science, potentates of analysis, laureates of the academies: we are thirsty and we are hungry; and you, who know by analysis how to decompose water and to know what wheat is composed of, give us a drop of water, produce for us a grain of wheat.
Why do you not heed our pleas? Humble your pride; confess your impotence; knowing only the effects, you do not know the force that produces the germ...
