13 de Novembro de 1917
Today it is exactly one month since tens of thousands of people, drawn by the repeated promises of three rough and uncouth children, gathered on the Heath of Fátima.
I too went there; not because I was spurred by the lively enthusiasm of an inner conviction that the announced portentous events would come about, but because the gratitude owed to an obliging and signal kindness obliged me to go.
The 13th of October had dawned rainy and harsh, but the whirl of the violent wind, accompanied by heavy showers, was not enough to overcome the sincere faith of some and the ardent curiosity of others.
Along the long road I met tens, hundreds, thousands of people who, lashed by the stormy gale, without a gesture of annoyance, without a flagging of spirit, went on along the flooded road in search of the place where prodigious events are said to have already taken place, and where others were due to occur on this day. The gravity and com-
posure that shone through on every face were a sure guarantee of the fervent belief that drove many, and of the respect that this naive and pure belief imposed on all.
Having arrived at the theatre of the resounding events, I was vividly impressed by the enormous multitude, reckoned at many thousands of people, which was gath-[2]ering with an order, a respect, a composure that were moving.
Not being able to force my way through to the famous Holm-oak shrub, which seems to have served as a kind of throne for the Heavenly Vision, I stayed on the road at a spot from which everything could be well observed.
Voices could be heard as far as where I was, distinct echoes of religious hymns in which the multitude was strengthening its faith while the solemn hour for which thousands of hearts were longing had not yet come.
The three children had just arrived, the uncouth and rough protagonists of the grandest and most extraordinary spectacle that I have yet been given to witness. The august moment was approaching. The persistent rain eased, and to the north, in a strip of sky, clear blue could be seen breaking through the leaden clouds.
To my mind, already moved by what I was witnessing, it occurred that it might well happen that that misty morning, with a sky laden with greyish clouds, was the mise-en-scène of a grand spectacle about to take place. On the clock the hand slowly marked 2 o'clock; and meanwhile the multitude waited in anxious recollection for the marvellous event that was to reinvigorate its faith.
Already in some candid souls the fear was arising that the announced event would not take place, when suddenly that whole immense multitude, at the voice of the seer, [3] stirred in a brouhaha expressive of amazement and astonishment and raised its head to the sky, where thousands of eyes contemplated, aghast, the sun in the open blue, visible to all, without the intensity of its rays hurting the retina and hindering vision, crowned with various colours, in a movement of swift rotation, seeming at times to break loose from the vault of heaven and approach the earth. The spectators, looking at one another, appeared to each other yellow in colour, and on the horizon, reddish-orange, wherever the eyes were fixed, beams of softened light could be seen,
of an oval shape, seemingly placed at equal distances, and reflected on the earth.
Such was the surprising phenomenon that all had occasion to observe, and which drew from some the sincere confession of ardent faith, and threw others, whose flower of belief had been scorched by the parching wind of scepticism, into a benevolent expectation.
What is it, then?
De que se trata, pois?
It is beyond doubt that we are in the presence of events that deeply moved the multitudes; many do not hesitate to classify them as a miracle.
Will it be one?
Sêl-o-há?
It would be rash to say so. Nevertheless it is certain that, by sound criticism, we can-[4]not and must not, in assessing the events, separate them from the circumstances that preceded, accompanied and followed them. Granting for argument's sake that in the case of Fátima everything is explained by natural causes, one circumstance is enough to [give] it the standing of the marvellous — that it was announced for a certain day and hour six months in advance and again on the day itself.
Coincidence?
Coincidencia?
But would such a coincidence not be admirable and surprising, of an event announced so far in advance and so firmly?
The events produced at Fátima had public places as their theatre, people of every social condition as their spectators, innumerable multitudes drawn there by three children of an almost savage roughness, numerous and fierce enemies.
And yet, if not all confessed themselves believers, all showed themselves overcome before the power that worked such a marvel.
On the greater number, without study, without science, the supernatural imposed itself with an unshakeable conviction, which is mystical certainty, which demands only good faith and which leads the upright man of sound judgement to exclaim: Digitus Dei est hic —.
That is why human languages, mysterious [5] organs of truth, gave a meaningful name to the act by which God exercises his sovereignty over nature and instantly manifests his presence to men: they called it miracle, that is, the admirable act par excellence, the act that constitutes the public power of God.
To those whose lips these considerations may perhaps bring a feeble laugh, I will say that we know the truth not only by reason but also by the heart. Beside reason, from which philosophy proceeds, there is nature, which expresses itself through the voice of instinct, of feeling or of the heart. Feeling is an echo of reason, which sometimes, because it echoes in the innermost recesses of the soul, makes itself heard better than reason itself. When one speaks of the light of the heart, one designates, without noticing it, the light of spontaneous reason, which reveals the truth to us with a vivid and pure intuition, diametrically opposed to the slow and laborious processes of reflective reason and reasoning.
And to those who, making a proud display of their science, mock the popular belief, simple and naive, I will say: Princes of science, potentates of analysis, laureates of the academies: we are thirsty and we are hungry; and you, who know by analysis how to break down [6] break down water and to know what wheat is composed of, give us a drop of water, produce for us a grain of wheat.
Why do you not heed our pleas? Humble your pride; confess your impotence: knowing only the effects, you do not know the force that produces the germ.
It did not surprise me, then, that the article published in number 507 of the "Ordem" and signed with the initials A. de F., which conceal the name of one of the most learned and dauntless champions of the Catholic cause, should have provoked such a great and unseemly uproar among the spectators of the events that took place at Fátima. Its author, in the intention of curbing enthusiasms that were perhaps excessive, tore from the simple soul of the multitudes, rich in faith and serene happiness, leaving in their soul, emptied of holy rejoicing and ineffable joys, the thorn of lacerating doubt.
Would it not be preferable to leave to the future the verification of the miracle or the confirmation of the mystification?
