Article from an unidentified newspaper, sent by its correspondent in Vila Nova de Ourém, on the rallies held by the Civil Registry Association in Vila Nova de Ourém and in Fátima1.
Artigo de um jornal não identificado, enviado pelo seu correspondente em Vila Nova de Ourém, sobre os comícios realizados pela Associação do Registo Civil, em Vila Nova de Ourém e em Fátima1.
“Vila Nova de Ourém, 3 — The affair of the apparition of the Virgin to the three shepherds at the spot of Vale da Iria is causing serious embarrassment to our freethinkers. A trio of them took it into their heads to come to this town to see whether they could win followers, and, in comradeship with the administrator of the council, the master tinsmith, they turned up on the 1st, after much advertising, at the Republican Centre, to speak to the crowds against the miracle of Fátima. Both that lecture and a rally they had announced in some newspapers of the capital and in pamphlets distributed in this town and throughout the council on market day and already on the previous Sunday.
“Vila Nova de Ourém, 3 — O caso da aparição da Virgem aos três pastores no sítio do Vale da Iria está causando sérios embaraços aos nossos livres-pensadores. Um terno deles lembrou-se de vir até esta vila ver se conseguia arranjar adeptos, e, de camaradagem com o administrador do concelho, o mestre funileiro, apareceram no dia 1, no fim de muito anunciados, no Centro Republicano, para falar às turbas contra o milagre de Fátima. Tanto essa conferência como um comício, fizeram-nos anunciar em alguns jornaes da capital e em pamfletos distribuídos nesta vila e por todo o concelho, no dia de mercado e já no domingo anterior.
What is known, however, is that for the miracle, or whatever they care to call it, no invitations were needed, and at the place of the apparition of the Virgin, on 13 October, upwards of 50 thousand people gathered, without the intervention of the authorities being needed to keep order, nor any military force, notwithstanding the great quantity of motor cars, carriages of various kinds, bicycles, etc., etc., and there was not the slightest accident.
O que se sabe, porém, é que para o milagre, ou como lhe queiram chamar, não foi preciso convites, e no local da aparição da Virgem, no dia 13 de Outubro, reuniram-se para cima de 50 mil pessoas, não tendo sido precisa a intervenção da autoridade para manter a ordem, nem força militar, não obstante a grande quantidade de automóveis, carros de diversas qualidades, bicicletas, etc., etc., não havendo o mais pequeno desastre.

tion of the Virgin, which never actually took place because only the celebrated orators turned up, accompanied by the administrator of the council and six more individuals from here, and guarded by a detachment of the republican guard of this town and others come from Tomar and Torres Novas, which were obliged to go to the spot at Fátima, given the orators' awareness of the seriousness and of the part they were going to play!

So, Ministers of the Interior and of War, are republican troops diverted from their duties to guard the backs of the republican gentlemen?
Então, srs. ministros do Interior e da Guerra, as tropas republicanas desviam-se dos seus serviços para guardar as costas aos srs. republicanos?
It was a real fiasco, the lecture at the centre already, and much greater at the place at Fátima, where the orators had to give up, since the people of the council, out of contempt, did not go to the spot, notwithstanding all the invitations made to them, for only eight people turned up there to listen, apart from the large number of women who, on the orators' arrival, intoned the Bemdito and at once turned their backs on them. Here, then, is the parallel between the days of 13 October and 2 December.
Foi um verdadeiro fiasco, já a conferência no centro, e muito maior no lugar de Fátima, onde os oradores tiveram de desistir, visto que o povo do concelho, por desprezo, não concorreu ao local, não obstante tanto convite que lhe foi feito, pois ali só apareceram oito pessoas para ouvirem, à excepção do grande número de mulheres que à sua chegada entoaram o Bemdito, voltando-lhes logo as costas. Eis, pois, o paralelo entre os dias 13 de Outubro e 2 de Dezembro.
