The Fatima affair
O caso de Fatima
Fatima lies in the concelho* of Villa Nova de Ourem, 18 kilometres from Leiria.
Fatima fica no concelho de Villa Nova de Ourem, a 18 kilometros de Leiria.
It is said that Our Lady appeared there to 3 children: two girls, one aged 10 and the other 6, and a boy of 8.
The event took place on 13 May of the current year and was repeated on the same day of the following months.
To a family from Porto who interviewed the eldest little seer*, she replied that Our Lady wanted the rosary to be prayed every day, that people should ask much forgiveness for their sins because Our Lord was very offended, and that a chapel should be built to her at that place. Moreover, she announced that the war would end at once and that our soldiers* would be home very soon.
On 13 August, when the event was due to be repeated, the administrator of the concelho seized the child seers and, after keeping them in custody, left them days later at the house of the parish priest. Nevertheless, on that 13th something extraordinary seems to have happened at the spot, and the people witnessed it.
On the 19th Our Lady appeared to the said children in another place, telling them that, although they had been detained, the miracle had been more visible.
Then came 13 September, when, according to the children, the apparition was repeated; they also announced a certain greater miracle for 13 October.
They say that, in fact, between 12 and 1 o'clock, the temperature had suddenly dropped, on a day of blazing sun, and a small eclipse had taken place. But 13 October dawned with rain, which kept increasing until it was copious.
The children had gone to the usual place. At one o'clock precisely the rain suddenly stopped and the sun appeared, brilliant, and there follow things which, were I to live a thousand years (says a person who observed it), could never be erased from my memory. It is an indescribable marvel that my eyes see.”
That is what is told of this celebrated affair, which not only Catholic newspapers but also unbelieving and Jacobin* ones are talking about.
If the fact is authentic, which remains to be proved, its character has still to be ascertained. Is it natural? is it preternatural? Is it a miracle? Who knows.
Quem o sabe.
It is a question difficult to decide, and whoever knows has not said so yet.
We await the verdict of the ecclesiastical authority, which, if consulted, will not fail to say of the affair what we must say and think.
For our part, we always defer to the laws of the Church, and do not pronounce ex cathedra on the supernatural character of the fact, although the evidence places it beyond doubt.
Por nossa parte, resalvamos sempre as leis da Egreja, não julgando ex cathedra do caracter sobrenatural do facto, embora as provas a ponham a coberto de duvidas.
