THE FÁTIMA AFFAIR

O CASO DE FÁTIMA

X

X

In every matter on which the judgement of ecclesiastical authority must be called upon, we would rather err through excess of prudence than through a craving for novelty; so for half a year3 we refrained from reporting anything about the extraordinary events said to be taking place on the 13th of each month in the parish of Fátima, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Ourém, patriarchate of Lisbon, 18 kilometres from Leiria, to whose now-extinct diocese* it once belonged.

The latest events, which took place there on the 13th of this month, witnessed by tens of thousands of people who went from every part of the country, including Porto, and already reported throughout the press, including the Catholic dailies, oblige us to set aside our more than scrupulous reserve and give the floor to a cultured lady, by means of a letter she wrote to one of the most respected priests of Porto, never imagining that we would draw it out of the privacy in which it was written into the light of publicity.

We therefore keep to ourselves the name of the writer, who, as readers will see, wrote from the heart and still under the impression of what she had just witnessed at Fátima.

Adding nothing of our own, we likewise venture nothing concerning the intervention or non-intervention of the supernatural in the case in

question. As in the Barral case*, it is for the Ordinary* concerned to pronounce judgement. We await it in both cases, certain as we are that the Church gains nothing from feigned miracles but always records true miracles in her archives; and these are not and cannot be, as a certain foreign-minded religious snobbery supposes, the preserve of France, not even when she had better claim than now to be called the eldest daughter of the Church.

Most Reverend Sir — As I promised, here I am, Reverend Sir, giving you an account of the dazzling and marvellous spectacle I had the happiness to witness. To describe it as it deserves is beyond my power and my skill! I shall simply set out the facts that have been taking place in this most fortunate region for six months.

Rev.mo Snr.

Since the 13th of May Our Lady has been appearing in the parish of Fatima to some little shepherds, on the same day of each month. I am sending you the portraits of the children4. The eldest — the principal seer — is 10 years old; the littlest, 6; and the little boy, I believe, is 8. They are cousins. This event, which some have believed, others disputed and many rejected, led the administrator of the municipality* — Vila Nova de Ourém — to abduct the children on the 13th of August; days later, after keeping them under arrest, he took them to the house of the Rev. parish priest of the parish. Even so, on that date something abnormal occurred in the sky, preceded by one or more claps of thunder, which the people heard.

On the 19th* Our Lady appeared to the said children in another place, telling them that because they had been imprisoned the miracle had been more visible. That is exactly how I heard them put it.

Then came the 13th of September; and on that day, after the apparition, the children said that on the 13th of October Our Lady would work a miracle so great that it could leave no one in doubt. Those who witnessed the 13th of September say that between 12 and 1, old time*, on a glorious day of blazing sun,

the temperature suddenly dropped and there was a small eclipse of the sun. Some people said they had seen pink clouds here and there. Not everyone believed them5. 5.

The 13th of October was awaited by believers and unbelievers, for very different reasons, with indescribable anxiety. It dawned rainy, and the rain kept increasing until it was pouring. I cannot describe to you what the place looked like!

The children had gone to the place at the usual hour, and we, who because of the rain had stayed in the car6 a long way off, saw very clearly when the people knelt, and we reckoned that this must be when the seer announced the apparition of the Virgin. Hymns are heard. We look: fear* and sadness had certainly taken hold of every heart, because the rain fell incessantly and no phenomenon appeared! The hour was getting on, and nothing! Yet we kept looking at the place of the apparition, and there we still saw the enormous crowd, which had not withdrawn. It was a sign that the seer was still there. And hope revived. Luiz Alvaiazere*, already half unbelieving, also said: Just now, at the spot where the children are, people were saying that the seer had declared it would be at one o'clock sharp today. We look at our watches. There were 2 minutes to go. Suddenly the rain stops as if by magic, the sun breaks through, dazzlingly bright, and there follow things that could never be erased from my memory were I to live a thousand years!! What our eyes see is an indescribable marvel! But for me, who am a believer — and today more than ever — the most marvellous thing about this marvel is that it was announced by a simple child of 10; and precisely on the day and at the hour she announced, the phenomenon dazzles us! Men of science will be able to explain it; but what they certainly will not know how, be able, or want to explain is the supernatural power that produced it. They may not admit the miracle; but I firmly believe that in their hearts they recognise it, because it is beyond dispute.

E a esperança renascia.

Yesterday we went to interview the seers. Lucia, who is the only one who speaks with Our Lady, was in the church, where she had gone with her mother to hear

Mass and receive communion. She made her first communion at 7. She is very sweet-natured. She told us — all the while playing with our hands or our lorgnettes — that Our Lady wants the rosary to be prayed every day; that we should ask much pardon for our sins, because Our Lord is very much offended; and that a little chapel should be built to her in that place. She presents herself under the title of Our Lady of the Rosary. She is dressed in white; barefoot; a white mantle over her head and a string of beads, also white, in her right hand. She announced the end of the war as imminent — the seer says “today” — and that our soldiers are coming back soon. Our Lady told her a secret, which she has been pressed to reveal but persists in not telling. She answered one man: — Our Lady told me not to tell anyone; and you are someone. At the moment of the miracle everyone was weeping, and from almost every mouth came the anguished cry: — Most Holy Mother, save our Sons*! Our Lady, save Portugal!

missa e commungar. Minha Nossa Senhora, salvae Portugal!

What a great grace for this country, what a very great grace for this region! Alcobaça, which is not very far from Fátima, considers itself one of the most civilised places. It is, however, one of the worst off in matters of religion, and therefore one of those most in need of the merciful intercession of the Virgin Our Lady.

The post is leaving, and I want this to go today. Forgive me, Reverend Sir, for this hastily cobbled-together letter, and allow me, with the most respectful consideration, to sign myself Your Reverence's most sincerely grateful, Alcobaça, 16-10-917.

From this account, so charming in its simplicity yet revealing an observant and intelligent mind, albeit a believing one, there emerges something consoling, which can and should encourage us to await, with eager hope of a favourable outcome, the veredictum of the Ordinary of Lisbon.

Before it we bow unconditionally, whether it comes to set one more most precious gem in the most resplendent diadem of the sublime

Patroness of the Portuguese, gaining one more title to the nation's gratitude, or whether it inclines to the negative side and shows us that there was nothing supernatural in the events of Fátima.

We shall say the same of the Barral case, where likewise there has so far been nothing – quite the contrary – that could dispel the well-founded hope, brought to us by the events that took place there in May of this year, that the Immaculate One continues to protect the Portuguese nation very visibly, despite its private infidelities and its official apostasy*.

Let us have recourse to Most Holy Mary, with ever greater fervour, that she may save us from the perdition which, humanly speaking, seems to be in store for our nationhood.
