THE SUPERNATURAL
O SOBRENATURAL
It is not a theological article on the Supernatural that we are going to write, but some comments prompted by the so-called apparitions of Fátima.
We have at times shown a certain optimism amid the appalling disintegration that for more than seven years* has been wasting the energies of the race in Portugal. That this optimism was no utopia is attested by the revival of religious faith: in some, taking on the character of protest, which is a very imperfect state of belief; in others, blossoming like a flower bursting with sap, under the influence of an ardent climate

The events of Fátima have brought to light the state of mind of our contemporaries. Many thinkers, even among Catholics, supposed that the religious spirit was entirely extinguished in most consciences. Base ambitions had perverted Portugal. Certain outward signs of religiosity counted for nothing in the desired intensification of belief. More out of tradition and sentiment than out of a definite conviction capable of confronting error, a great multitude of churchgoers lived on here and there.
And among these, the men were certainly not legion.
At most they respected the beliefs of the family, attending the pompous feasts as a pastime and out of curiosity. In this easy participation in some Christian duties, how many voluntarily set a limit to the very proclamation of the dogmas and lived in the dangerous illusion that they would reach heaven without any great sacrifice! Religious indifference produced political and social indifference. A ferocious individualism deadened the spirit of charity. Religion had no deep influence on morals. Belief in a supernatural order almost disappeared in the violent turmoil of ambitions, pleasures and riches. For the priest, who knows these moral miseries at very close quarters, the state of minds has been considered one of extreme decadence; and not rarely he appeals almost exclusively to heaven, in a de-Christianised land, where little is to be hoped from a slow evolution and from a most limited, most deficient religious education which, unfortunately, does not reach the bulk of the population, through the fault of those who, having influence and wealth, disregard the repeated warnings and appeals of the Church and her ministers to create and protect Catholic social works.
A indifferença religiosa produziu a indifferença politica e social.
Here and there, well-intentioned and impartial men, contemplating the injustices suffered by the Church and by her priests and most beloved children in these seven years of trial, have recognised the truth of Christianity and the need to set strong dykes against the torrential currents of chronic ills aggravated by the stormy flood of revolutions. But this support was not enough to dispel the general impression of religious indifference or collective cowardice. Portugal — why hide it? — has been judged by eminent thinkers to be a lost country; lost to political independence and to Christian civilisation. The most alarming symptoms of dissolution contributed to this pessimistic reasoning; and then, when it was least expected, a remarkable fact came to hearten the dispirited prophets of national misfortune; one of those revelations that do not deceive and that impose themselves, of themselves, on the study and the rejoicing of true thinkers, in a surprise full of the loftiest lessons, which must urgently be turned to account.

When in a small country of five million souls fifty thousand people gather in a lonely place at the word of three uneducated, unpolished children, flocking from every part of the country in a stir of faith or curiosity, undeterred by the pouring rain and the fatigue of eight or nine leagues*, which many covered on foot, from the nearest station or town to the place of the said apparitions of Our Lady to three little shepherds, all is not lost.
And what is more noteworthy (it is the anti-Catholic newspapers themselves that say so), there had been no prompting from the clergy, who had gone there as onlookers and who used, and are still using, every prudence in commenting on what was seen and what has so far been established from the various accounts. The impression made by the phenomena of the sun at the hour of the apparitions was one of the deepest and most moving: that multitude wept, proclaimed the power of God, knelt, prayed, sang hymns, begged aloud for mercy, almost feared that the sun would plunge down from the heights where it appeared to be oscillating in a whirl of movements and colours, believed in a miracle and in what the children said, and censured, and continues to censure, those who dare, even prudently, to hold the series of miraculous reports in reserve, in an expectation worthy of Catholics.
Warm defences, brilliant in their conviction that there were miracles at Fátima, have appeared in the press; pious and distinguished ladies have published most interesting articles on the subject; and there is, in general, open hostility towards those who deny the supernatural in the Fátima affair or doubt its truthfulness and significance. Even Dr Domingos Pinto Coelho*, a man of the noblest character and a Catholic of indisputable authority and prestige, did not escape the displeasure of those who believe in the revelations to the children and in the miracle of the sun (and they are almost all of those who were at Fátima on 13 October last at one in the afternoon), because he loyally came forward to confess that he had seen the same phenomena in the sun on the following day, and to explain the Catholic attitude to be observed in cases of this kind: prudence, study and expectation.

Whatever the result of the scrupulous inquiries that competent persons are making, whether the conclusion be for the miracle
or for uncertainty or for its denial, there is in all this an encouraging fact that the Catholic press cannot fail to note joyfully: it is the inclination towards the Supernatural, the vibration of faith that surged in so many souls, the public and solemn acknowledgement of the power of God, the disquiet of many who went there out of mere curiosity or perhaps to mock those who believed in the apparitions; the irresistible, spontaneous kneeling of many unbelievers; the psychology that was then established and that tends to become general thanks to the ardent propaganda that those present at Fátima spread wherever they are.
The ease with which such a current was established (it has already gone to evident extremes, such as claiming as settled what the Church has not yet examined), the sum of impressions and enthusiasms and the general eagerness to believe have proved, we repeat, that in Portugal all is not lost. For a few moments, at Fátima, the old Portuguese soul came alive again. A world higher than that of the miseries in which we live was glimpsed by the eager eyes of the multitude that represented there the generous aspiration of Catholic, orderly and fervent Portugal. The collective feeling, ruled by the intensity of faith or by the surprise of unique manifestations, kept order in the place. In a multitude of fifty thousand people there was not one incident to regret.
Let the Jacobin rabble look at this, then, and let those who from the seats of power have despised the influence of Religion, under the Monarchy as under the Republic, see the enormous error there is in these stupid and most unjust persecutions against the foremost civilising and order-keeping force in the world.
Add these signs of belief to the country's malaise and its general protest at the abuses committed, and they will conclude with us: in Portugal, with work, much patience and intelligent judgement, a true re-Christianisation can be achieved!
