Description of the document: Fairly thin paper, 22.5x16cm. Immaculate Conception, half-length, surrounded by a circle of clouds3, and below two little shepherd girls kneeling, looking upwards, with a holm oak between them.

However, we have no doubt that the image used in the representation of Our Lady of Peace was that of Our Lady of the Conception in Leiria Cathedral. Note especially the image's halo, consisting of a ring of twelve six-pointed stars (Cf. AZEVEDO, Carlos de, Porque apareceu Nossa Senhora na Fátima?, Leiria, Gráfica de Leiria, 1944, p. 64-65). The fact that the Imprensa Comercial printing house was located in the Largo da Sé [Cathedral Square] corroborates our position. We admit, however, that the caption of this picture may have been inspired by a "pamphlet published in Porto on 1 July 1917 about the Barral apparitions, on whose title page one reads: "Queen of Peace, Pray for us... Our Lady of Barral? Our Lady of Peace." (COSTA, Avelino de Jesus da, ob. cit., p. 360), all the more so as the newspaper "O Mensageiro", Leiria, printed at the same press, had published about two months earlier "A Estrela do Céu - Oração pela paz" relating to the vision of Barral (cf. "O Mensageiro", Leiria, 3 (151), 22 Aug. 1917, p. 2, col. 3-5).

Nossa Senhora do Barral? 3-5).

Editors' notes

1 From the advertisement published in "O Mensageiro", 4 (157), 11 Oct. 1917, p. 3, col. 3 (Doc. 45), we believe that these pictures were made and printed in the first days of October, certainly before 11 October.
1 Pelo anúncio publicado em "O Mensageiro", 4 (157), 11 Out. 1917, p. 3, col.
2 Inácio António Marques, in a letter to the Promoter of the Faith* of 23 November 1922, says, about 13 October 1917: "A gentleman from Leiria appeared, handing out pictures with portraits of the three children and Our Lady, and gave me a bundle of them to hand out although he did not know me". (Cf. DCF, vol. 2 Doc. A, p. 149-154).
(Cf. DCF, vol. 2 Doc. A, p. 149-154).
3 It was initially thought that the engraving of Our Lady of Peace had been inspired by Murillo's Immaculate Conception. According to Dr. Avelino de Jesus da Costa, this engraving would be "an adaptation of the one published in Braga in June 1917 to spread the antiphon Star of Heaven, recommended by the vision of Barral, on whose title page Murillo's Immaculate Conception is reproduced" (Cf.
4 At the Shrine there is another copy, in black and white, which has on the back: "This picture is offered to Maria de Jezus Louzáda = By Her Son = Emigdio Pereira Rócha. Torres Novas = 7-2-1918. Souvenir"
Torres Novas = 7-2-1918. Recordação"
