Dear Amadeu.

Caro Amadeu.

Thank you ever so much for the postcard you sent me; however, I ask you again:

Agradeço imenso o postal que me enviaste no entanto torno-te a perguntar:

Do you wear, or have you been wearing, the stars4?

Tu pões ou tens posto as estrelas4?

Well, that said, I'm going to describe to you something that happened to me, which you can judge however and in whatever way you like.

On Friday the 12th I set off with my haversack, which you know from Casais5, full of tins of food and bread etc., for the station6 to catch the 11.30 mail train. I got to Entroncamento, where the

train was held up for two and a half hours, reaching "chão de maçãs"* at half past 4 in the afternoon, where I [1v] got off. By great luck I found a seat in the stagecoach, since many people were left behind, and at half past 5 I reached Vila Nova de Ourem. The purpose of this journey of mine was to go and see the miracle of Fátima. On the way I met hundreds of people heading there.

I begged for a bed in a boarding house, but there was none; however, after much pleading they gave me a bed in a room people had to walk through. I lay down in my clothes, and at some point I feel a terrible itching from bedbugs that were eating me alive. I grabbed the blanket and pillow I had brought (part of my pack, which weighed 12 kilos) and lay down on the floor, falling asleep for half an hour, and woke shortly afterwards to find a maid furious because I wasn't using the bed. Just for show I lay down on the bed again, and woke up once more with a huge rat on top of me gnawing my foot; I shake it off, kicking a basin, which nearly fell with a great clatter. This was at half past 1 in the night. I gave up on sleeping and got up in the dark, because the maid had taken my matches.

All night long people went by on their way to Fátima. At 4 in the morning some people who had come in a motor car knocked at the door, and I seized the chance to leave the house with no regrets, walking 12 km in constant rain and [2v] a wind that cut your face; if it hadn't been for the brandy I had with me, I don't know whether I would even have reached the place of the miracle.

At 9, when I arrived, there were already people there who had spent the night in the rain. Until 2 o'clock*, the time the miracle was due, the heavy rain never stopped, and everyone, refusing to budge from the spot, was soaked to the bone. I had a greatcoat, a pillow on my head and a blanket over everything, and still the water ran down my arms. Until 2 the stream of people and of vehicles of every kind, from every province, never stopped. Motor cars from Spain and France; women who had come on foot from the Algarve and the Alentejo; fishwives from Lisbon

who must have spent 18 000* on the journey. In short, a thing [3] (2) that neither I nor you have ever seen in all our lives. The heath of the apparition is like my father's land at Casais, a plain surrounded by hills, and over those hills and the valley people were jostling each other as at a rally in the Rotunda13.

Everyone, myself included (although the anti-Catholic newspapers play down the numbers), reckoned more than a hundred and some thousand people, from every region of the country etc.

In spite of the ceaseless rain, choirs of girls singing sacred songs in tune could be heard on every side.

Until 2 o'clock, when the girls to whom Our Lady appeared arrived, the stream of people from every part of the country never stopped, some having walked 12 leagues* to come and with 12 more to walk back.

[3v] The little girls knelt in the middle of the throng, where there was a rough altar, and I was only 100 metres from it, which was very lucky. The circle of people round the little girls was a kilometre long and a kilometre wide, and inside it was a dense mass of people. The rain kept on and on; the women's chins were even trembling, they were so wet. At this point the little girls told everyone to close their umbrellas, and the rain stopped immediately.

In the sky, which was completely overcast with clouds, a circle opened, in which the sun could be seen as if it were the moon on a moonlit night, and it had a silver halo round it.

[4] The circle then took on in succession the colours blue, red, yellow and green, and at the same time all objects took on that colour. This lasted 1 minute, after which the sky clouded over again. Next, at the moment when Our Lady spoke with the little girls, for which she had come down from heaven, a dark cloud formed round the sun, which everyone could look at without hurting their eyes,

taking on various colours and seeming to come down on us. Then, when Our Lady went back up to heaven, the cloud, which now looked like fire, rose again with the sun, and the cloud began to spin round the sun, while the sun, against the blue of the sky and still with its silver halo, began to shake violently.

[4v] Only by seeing this dazzling miracle can one form any idea of it, and I give you my word of honour that I became convinced it was a miracle, and I have as witnesses the 100 000 people who were there. I can also tell you that as soon as the miracle ended (it lasted 15m. in all), the sun was shining as it does every day, so that nobody, as you know, can stare at it for even 1m. While this phenomenon was taking place, pious exclamations rose into the air from 100 000 mouths. I had, as other people told me they did too, an extraordinary impression, together with a longing to know the impossible. When the miracle was over everyone woke up as if from a dream, and the impression passed.

[5] (3) Our Lady told the little ones26 to have a small chapel built on that spot, and said that the war would end shortly and that the Portuguese* would soon return. The man beside me, who didn't believe in anything, was gradually converted while the miracle was happening. At the end of it all everyone wanted to see the little girls; I made several attempts but got nowhere, and very nearly broke an arm. Everyone began to leave in perfect order, without any need for police.... I didn't see a single drunk, nor was there even one argument. I questioned several people about what had happened, and everyone told me and described it to me in the

Enterroguei varias pessoas sobre o sucedido e toda a gente me dizia e me contava da

way I had seen it. For 4, 5, 6 hours (and that was only half of them, because the other half, which was 29 from the west, left by another road) [5v] the crowd filed past, as on the avenue on a Sunday or at the exit of the bullring, all along the 12-kilometre road, so thickly that the motor cars had to keep pace with the carts. I set off for chão de maçãs, covering 22 kilometres to the sound of the hymns of the girls from Tomar, from the Alentejo, etc. There must have been 1000 vehicles in all, since the motor cars alone, on the eastern side, numbered over 100.

I reached chão de maçãs at half past 9, having tramped 34 km in all that day with only 2 tins of sardines in my belly, because I got sick of them and had nothing else with me. Towards the end of those 34 km I could hardly go on, because the load was heavy and the greatcoat, blanket and pillow, swollen with rain, weighed twice as much. [6] Another sleepless night, and I came on the half-past-4 train, which only reached S. Anna at half past 8 and was packed solid. I was extremely weak and exhausted. I set off for Cartaxo, another 3 km, which took me longer to walk than 6 normally would, because I had gone 3 days with almost nothing to eat and was worn out from walking 40 km in all, carrying myself and the pack, and soaked to the skin; and yet, after all this, I tell you it was worth it. It isn't only I who say so.

There were people who had spent 6 days travelling on foot in all, covering 24 leagues of road, and they said the same.

Everyone, men and women, came away indignant with the freethinkers*, and there are 100 000 people who are witnesses [6v] of a miracle that nobody can dispute. I got home on Sunday at 10 in the morning, and after I had eaten and rested, because I couldn't even speak,

I explained such a sensational phenomenon. Today, Monday, I am already reading in the Seculo* the description by the reporters I met on the way, and they don't dispute it. However, the Seculo, as is its habit, mocks it on the sly. Excuse the style and the spelling; keep this letter and believe what it contains, because I saw it, and I give you my word that what is written here is what happened to me and what I saw. A big hug from your friend

Fernando.

Fernando.

P.S. I'm tired, and when I can, and after receiving your reply, more details will follow.
