Fernando António Souza Coutinho
All night long people passed by going to Fátima. At 4 in the morning people who had come in a motor car knocked at the door, and I took the opportunity to leave the house without regrets, walking 12 K. under constant rain and [2v] wind that cut your face; if it hadn't been for the brandy I had with me I don't even know whether I would have reached the place of the miracle.
At 9, the time I arrived, there were already people there who had spent the night in the rain. Until 2 o'clock, the time the miracle was supposed to happen, the heavy rain didn't stop, and everyone, without budging from the spot, got soaked to the bone. Even with a greatcoat and a pillow on my head and a blanket over everything, the water ran down my arms. Until 2 the stream of people and of vehicles of every kind and from every province didn't stop. Motor cars from Spain and France; women who had come on foot from the Algarve and the Alemtejo; fishwives from Lisbôa who must have spent 18 000 on the journey; in short, a thing [3] (2) that neither I nor you have seen in all the days of our lives. The heath of the apparition is like my father's casais, a plain surrounded by hills, and over those hills and valley the people were elbowing each other as at a rally in the Rotunda13.
I and everyone (although the anti-Catholic newspapers play down the number of people) reckoned more than a hundred and something thousand people from every region of the country etc.
In spite of the ceaseless rain, choirs of girls singing sacred songs in tune could be heard on every side.
Until 2 o'clock, the time when the girls to whom Our Lady appeared came, the stream of people from every part of the country didn't stop, with 12 leagues coming and 12 going on foot.
[3v] The little girls knelt down in the middle of the crowd, where there was a rough altar, from which I was only 100 metres away, being very lucky in that. The circle of people round the little girls was a Kilometre long by another wide, and inside it there was a dense mass of people. The rain kept on /going\ on and on; the women's chins were even trembling, they were so wet; at this point the little girls ordered the umbrellas to be closed and the rain stopped immediately.
In the sky, which was completely overcast with clouds, a circle opened, in which the sun could be seen as if it were the moon on a moonlit night, and it h/ad\ a silver halo round it.
[4] The circle then took on in succession the colours blue, red, yellow and green, and at the same time all objects took on that colour. This lasted 1 minute, at the end of which the sky clouded over again. Next, at the moment when Our Lady spoke with the little girls, and for which she came down from the sky, a dark cloud formed round the sun, which everyone could stare at without it hurting their eyes, taking on various colours and seeming to come down on us. Then, when Our Lady went up to heaven, the cloud, which now looked like fire, went up again with the sun, and the cloud began to spin round the sun, while the sun, against the blue background of the sky, still with the silver halo, began to tremble enormously.
[4v] Only by seeing this dazzling /miracle/ can one form an idea of it, and I give you my word of honour that I was convinced it was a miracle, and I have as witnesses the 100 000 people who were present. I also tell you that as soon as the miracle ended, which lasted 15m. in all, the sun was shining in such a way, and as it usually does every day, that nobody, as you know, is capable of staring at it for even 1m. At the same time as this phenomenon was taking place, pious exclamations rose into the air from 100 000 mouths. I, like other people told me they did, had an extraordinary impression, so that at the same time as a wish to know the impossible. When the miracle was over everyone woke up as if from a dream and the impression passed.
[5] (3) Our Lady told the little ones26 that a hermitage was to be built at that place and that the war would end in a short while from now and that the Portuguese would return soon. The man beside me, who didn't believe in anything, was gradually converted while the miracle was happening. At the end of it all everyone wanted to see the little girls, for which I made several efforts, but I got nowhere and very nearly broke an arm. Everyone began to withdraw in the best order without any need for policemen.... I didn't see a single drunk, nor was there even one argument. I questioned several people about what had happened and everyone told me and related it to me in the way I had seen it. For 4 to 5 to 6 hours (only half, because the other half, which was 29 from the west, withdrew by another road) [5v] they filed past as on the avenue on Sundays or as at the exit from the bullring, along the 12-Kilometre road, to such a point that the motor cars kept pace with the carts. I set off for chão de maçãs, covering 22 Kilometres to the sound of the hymns of the girls from Tomar, from the Alemtejo, etc. Vehicles in all must have numbered 1000, since motor cars alone, from the eastern side, numbered over 100.
