THE "FILM"* ROLLING ON

A "FITA" CORRENDO

(The appearance of a saint)

(O aparecimento d'uma santa)

Drawn more or less by curiosity, I too went to the place at Fátima (municipality of Ourem) where they said a saint appeared on the 13th of each month last year. That thousands of people and thousands of vehicles were there is beyond dispute. But I shall ask: was it perhaps belief that drove the visitors? Was it religious devotion that drew them there? No, simply curiosity. A minority may have been drawn by religious beliefs. The rest were not. And if that minority were willing to view what happened in the light of reality, it would come away completely unbelieving. Everything that happened with reference to the miracle was nothing but mere fantasy. That said, let us take two hypotheses. Either the saint appeared or she did not. If she appeared, saying through the mouth of the shepherds that the war would end at that time, she lied, since precisely at that period some American republics were announcing their entry into the war. If she did not appear, I will say that all the clericals who were making propaganda for the said miracle fell for a hoax. On either hypothesis the so-called miracle of Fátima can never pass for a fact, only for mere fantasy. It is beyond dispute that the sun underwent some alteration (against facts there are no arguments), observed not only at Fátima but in many other parts of the country; but I shall ask:

— Did the saint have any part in the phenomenon? No, because she did not even appear. Of all the people who went there, all who were present, none will say: "I saw the saint". They will only say: "I saw the dance of the sun". But I regret that in Portugal, well into the twentieth century, there are still people who pride themselves on being educated who let themselves be taken in by the swindle of the said miracle, when it all came down to a simple phenomenon. But what I am inclined to believe, and will not dispute, is that a century from now, or sooner, the said appearance will be passed off as true. They will have the effrontery to publis[h], loud and clear, that in the year 1917 a saint appeared to all the people at the place called Fátima, etc., etc. Clericalism is capable of anything, even imposture, so that belief should not be shaken from the minds of its faithful lambs (sic). Remember the example of the "Reflection of the sun on the Crucifix" in the reign of Dom Manuel I*. And will they deny that, besides the slanderous miracle of the "Reflection", persecution and rancour followed? Persecution followed, and rancour, and crime. Innocent children, their throats barbarously cut, succumbed to the black claws of clericalism. And why? Because that New Christian did not wear the mask of ignorance or of ignominy. He knew better than the gullible people that it was no miracle but an optical effect. But since the voice of the clericals finds an echo only in darkness, since it tends to shun the light of truth, that is why ignorance triumphed in that very backward age. But I must limit my remarks, or else I shall go the same way and meet the same fate as the New Christian. In these times when they, the clericals, think themselves on conquered ground. In these times when freedom of thought and action is violated. No matter. The world moves on. What I shall always, always say, with the pride of a freethinker, is that the forces of reaction took advantage of the phenomenon of the sun to attribute it to a miracle. — "A miracle fallen into ridicule, devoid of foundation and sustained by hoaxes".

— Teve a santa interferencia no fenomeno? Não, porque ela nem sequer apareceu. Todas as pessoas que ali compareceram, todas as que ali assistiram, nenhuma dirá: “Eu vi a santa”. Apenas dirá: “Eu vi o bailado do sol”. Apareceu a perseguição, o rancor e o crime.
