Letter from Gonçalo de Almeida Garrett to Dr. Manuel Nunes Formigão, speaking of the phenomenon of the manifestation of smoke that occurred at the Cova da Iria during the apparitions.

I consider a reply to Your Excellency's kind letter urgent.

Julgo urgente uma resposta á presada carta de V. Ex^a.

I am very, very sorry that we cannot have a friendly meeting and a calm discussion.

Muita, muitissima penna tenho de não podermos ter uma amavel conferencia e placida discussão.

In these times of incredulity in which we live, a phenomenon of the physical order is more important than one of the moral order, and especially for enlightened and scientific and learned men.

Nos tempos que vão correndo de incredulidade, é mais importante um phenomeno da ordem phisica, do que da ordem moral, e principalmente para os homens illustrados e scientificos e de saber.

Consider the enormous importance attached to the darkening of the sun at the death of Christ, so much so that Easter [1v] Sunday is movable and always the 1st Sunday after the full moon of March.

Haja vista a inorme importancia que se liga e dá ao escorecimento do sol á morte de Christo. E tanto que o domingo [1v] de Paschoa é variavel e sempre o 1º domingo depois da lua cheia de março.

A physical phenomenon, important but inexplicable, is more important than a miracle, as it is commonly called, which might be produced or occasioned by the action of the nervous system.

É mais importante um phenomeno phisico, importante mas inexplicavel, do que um milagre, como vulgarmente se diz, que poderá ser produzido ou ocasionado pela acção do systema nervoso.

There are cases of paralytics walking after an electric shock, or through another person's hypnotic action. The same can happen with a blind man. Etc., Etc.

Ha casos de paralyticos andarem, por um choque electrico, ou pela acção hypnotica d'outra pessoa. O mesmo n'um homem sego póde acontecer. Etc., Etc.

These matters have given rise to serious and endless debates about the truth of miracles.

Estes assumptos teem dado logar a graves e immensas discussões sôbre a veracidade dos milagres.

There are the talking tables^*, etc.

Ha as mesas falantes, etc.

I know that so-called stupendous, evident miracles have [2] taken place.

Sei que se teem dado milagres [2] chamados estupendos, evidentes.

I consulted Dr. Ferreira da Silva⁵, professor at the University of Porto. He says that the phenomenon of the impression of smoke can be considered under three categories:

Consultei o Dr. Ferreira da Silva⁵ lente da Universidade do Porto. Diz elle que o phenomeno da impressão do fumo, poderá ser considerada em trez cathegorias:

1st Produced by an evaporation

1º Produzida por uma evaporação

2nd Occasioned by an incomplete combustion.

2º Ocasionada por uma combustão incompleta.

3rd Caused by a chemical reaction, such as the reaction of two gaseous compounds, such as hydrochloric gas and ammonia, giving solid bodies: ammonium chloride.

3º Causada por uma reação chymica, como a reação de dois compostos gasosos, como o gaz chloridrico e o amoniaco, dando corpos solidos: o chloreto de amoniaco.

The gases or vapours produced in any of these cases carry up with them extremely tiny, infinitesimal solid particles which produce the impression of smoke, because they are opaque.

Os gases ou vapores produzidos em qualquer dos casos, elevam consigo elementos solidos diminutissimos, infinitesimaes que produzem a impressão de fumo, por serem opacos.

The phenomenon of the manifestation of smoke must be studied [2v] over two periods.

O phenomeno da manifestação do fumo tem de ser estudado [2v] durante duas epochas.

1st During the period of the apparition, from 13 May to 13 October 1917, at Fatima, around noon.

1º Durante o periodo da aparição de 13 de maio a 13 de outubro de 1917, em Fatima, pelo meio dia.

2nd Before and after this period at the same place, beside the blessed holm oak.

2º Antes e depois deste periodo no mesmo local, junto á azinheira abençoada.

1st case

1º caso

(a) To examine and ascertain the manifestation of the smoke on the 13th day of the six months from May to October, around noon, beside the holm oak.

(a) Examinar e averiguar a manifestação do fumo nos dias 13 dos seis mezes de maio a outubro, pelo meio dia, junto á azinheira.

(b) To examine and ascertain the manifestation of the smoke on the other days from 14 May to 12 October, and whether it took place or did not take place and at any hour.

(b) Examinar e averiguar a manifestação do fumo nos outros dias de 14 de maio a 12 de outubro, e se teve ou não teve logar e a qualquer hora.

Hypothesis (a) is the most delicate to prove, it being necessary to obtain eyewitnesses for all 6 days, designated for each day. Was there one also on 13 May?

A hypothese (a) é a mais melindrosa a comprovar, sendo necessario obter testemunhas oculares para todos os 6 dias, designados para cada dia. Houve tambem em 13 de maio?

[3] To examine or verify what happened on 13 August, when the children did not appear. The positive proof of (a) is delicate and crucial, and direct with eyewitnesses. Hypothesis (b) is easy to verify and prove, by appointing in Santarem or another town a commission of 3 or 5 members, educated, serious and respectable people, who can carry out an inquiry among the inhabitants of the surroundings of Fatima and of the place itself.

[3] Examinar ou comprovar o que se deu em 13 de Agosto, em que não compareceram as creanças. A prova positiva de (a) é melindrosa e capital e directa com testemunhas oculares. A hypothese (b) é facil de verificar e comprovar, nomeando em Santarem ou outra terra uma commissão de 3 ou 5 membros de pessoas illustradas, serias e respeitaveis as quaes podem proceder a um inquerito entre os habitantes das redondezas de Fatima e da mesma terra.

2nd Case

2º Caso

(c) To examine and ascertain what manifestation of smoke there was before 13 May 1917; none is [3v] recorded as having taken place at Fatima, at any hour of the day, beside the holm oak.

(c) Examinar e averiguar qual a manifestação do fumo, antes de 13 de maio de 1917, as quaes não [3v] consta tivessem logar em Fatima a qualquer hora do dia, junto á azinheira.

(d) Likewise to ascertain and find out what manifestation of smoke there was after 13 October, although there is no record of there having been any manifestation at all.

(d) Egualmente averiguar e saber qual fosse a manifestação do fumo, depois de 13 de outubro, apesar de não constar que houvesse manifestação alguma.

Hypotheses (c) (d) are likewise very easy to verify and prove, by the appointment of a Commission, 3 or 5 members, people from Santarem or another town, intelligent[,] educated and respectable people. They would carry out rigorous inquiries among the inhabitants of the surroundings. By systematising the inquiries (a), (b), (c), (d) in the way indicated it is easy to ascertain what has happened at Fatima regarding the [4] manifestation of the smoke on the 6 days of the apparitions, in the months from May to October. And one can also reach the rigorous conclusion that on no other day did any known manifestation of smoke take place at the

Sistematisando os inqueritos (a), (b), (c), (d) pelo modo indicado é facil averiguar o que se tem dado em Fatima, sôbre a [4] manifestação do fumo, nos 6 dias das apparições, nos mezes de maio a outubro. E tambem se póde chegar á conclusão rigorosa de que em nenhum outro dia se deu alguma manifestação do fumo conhecida no

same place and above all at the same hour of the day. If it is proved by trustworthy eyewitnesses that on the 13th of the months from May to October, around or at the hour of noon, the manifestation of smoke always took place; and if it is confirmed by the appointed commissions that there was no manifestation nor trace of a manifestation at the same place at any hour, the place at Fatima beside the holm oak, it is demonstrated that the manifestations [4v] occurring and verified at Fátima are supernatural and miraculous.

Thereby the declarations of the three children are confirmed, that the Virgin, under the title of the Rosary, appeared six times beside a holm oak, at the place of Fatima.

Comprovadas ficam as declarações das trez creanças de que a Virgem, com a designação do Rosario, appareceu por seis vezes junto a uma azinheira, no logar de Fatima.

I beg Your Excellency kindly to acknowledge this letter, and if, for lack of time, that cannot be done otherwise, I hope for the kindness of a postcard, which I will understand.

Rogo a V. Ex^a o favor de me acusar esta carta, e quando não póssa ser por outro modo, por falta de tempo, espero a finesa de um bilhete postal que eu entendo.

Wishing Your Excellency the best of health, the better to work in favour of the apparitions of the Virgin of the Rosary at Fatima.

Sr^a D. Maria de Jesus Raposo has been here. She says she was at Fátima on 13 August 1917 (when the children were not there). The smoke was much greater, like a sort of globe that enveloped the holm oak.

Esteve aqui a Sr^a D. Maria de Jesus Raposo. Diz que esteve em Fátima no dia 13 agosto (em q. não estavam as creanças) de 1917. A manifestação do fumo foi muito maior, como uma especie de globo que envolveu a azinheira.

Professor of Chemistry at the Polytechnic Academy of Porto. He was director of the chemistry laboratory until his retirement. Author of a vast bibliography and considered the "greatest Portuguese chemist of his time" (cf. SANTOS, Cândido – Universidade do Porto.
