Most Excellent Fr. Formigão

Exmo Snr Padre Formigão

On this feast of Our Lady of the Rosary*, when the protection of the Virgin Mary has once more been shown in the sweetest hope of Peace*! I humbly fulfil the promise I made to Your Excellency.

Feeling that I lack the merit to describe well what I heard, even more than what I saw, I say the prayer of St Bernard* so [that] Most Holy Mary may inspire me in this moving narrative. [1v] Almost a year ago, on the thirteenth of October 1917, thousands of people were at Fátima, piously hoping to witness the miracle which the Queen of Heaven had announced on the same day in each of the five previous months.

At 8 in the morning I was already at my post, next to the place of the Apparitions.

From 9 o'clock an uninterrupted rain soaked us, as if Our Lady wished to test the patience of her faithful with this small trial.

As a first blessing of her infinite mercy, there was no [2] harm to record among the many people of frail health who endured it.

Near noon – God's time* – the Little Shepherds arrive: Lucia, Jacintha and Francisco.

As if by magic, the rain stops while the Little Ones pray the rosary, which we devoutly pray with them, trembling as the Sacred Hour approaches!

Suddenly, Lucia's voice:

De repente, a voz de Lucia:

– There She is, on the little holm oak.

– Lá está Ella, na Carrasqueira.

An eternal, supernatural sensation, that of knowing the Mother of God to be near us!

Sensação eterna, sobrenatural a de saber a Mãe de Deus, junto de nós!

Prostrate on the ground, hands raised in [2v] supplication, in the fervent contrition of human wretchedness before the divine greatness, the holiness of Holinesses!

Then I distinctly heard this sentence from Lucia: – Won't you work the miracle today that you promised me? –

And after these simple words of that predestined child, I heard from her the sentence that destroys all doubt and dispels all the hesitation with which the learned seek to confuse the supernatural with a phenomenon of nature, an illusion that has shaken the firmness of so many believers!

[3] Look at the Sun –

[3] Olhem para o Sol –

And only after that exclamation of Lucia's, like an order from Heaven, did the Queen of Angels cause that prodigious miracle to appear, that glorious Sun which illuminated her Apparition with a light that no Christian soul will ever be able to extinguish!

I affirm that I heard four more sentences: – Don't you want anything more of me today? –

And, after the question, as if repeating syllables and words which the Mother of Christ was murmuring to her from Heaven: – Cha - Chapel or Church here? –

[3v] And, for the first time, with a radiant face, and clapping her hands.

– It's Our Lady of the Rosary –

– É Nossa Senhora do Rosario –

Turning again to Jacintha, and moving her head down from right to left, as if following the path taken by the Immaculate Virgin, she exclaimed:

– She went that way.

– Foi para ali.

The Apparition was ending.

Findava a Apparição.

What will never end in this soul of a Child of Mary* is the blessed belief that the Queen of the Most Holy Rosary was near us, in her clemency, for a people once so fervent and today so wavering in its Faith!
