The newspaper “A Época”1 publishes the testimony of Dr. Gonçalo de Almeida Garret on the phenomenon of the cloud of smoke (date of writing: 27 September 1919).

We have been asked by our friend Dr. Gonçalo de Almeida Garrett to publish the present article. As to the facts referred to in it, we reserve our judgement, awaiting the pronouncement of the ecclesiastical Authority on them:

The truth of the supernatural apparitions at Fatima must be treated and discussed on new grounds, independently of the nervous action of the human organism. That is what present times require.
A veracidade das aparições sobrenaturaes em Fatima, deve ser tratada e discutida em bases novas, sem dependencia da acção nervosa do organismo humano. Convem assim nos tempos presentes.
Let everyone come to Fatima to see and observe for themselves the surprising facts that are manifesting themselves there at present.
Concorram todos a Fatima, para de seu proprio criterio, ver e observar os factos surprehendentes que ali se estão manifestando actualmente.
Not even two years have passed since 13 October 1917, a day so memorable for the whole country. As if by magic, a devout little chapel dedicated to the Virgin of the Rosary has already been built beside the blessed holm oak.
Nem decorridos são dois anos, desde 13 de Outubro de 1917, dia tão memoravel para o paiz inteiro. Como por encanto, já foi elevada, junto á asinheira de benção, uma devota capelinha, com a invocação de Virgem do Rosario.
The crowds who come there are extraordinary, praying fervently, to fulfil a vow or in thanks for graces received.
Ali é extraordinaria a concorrencia de pessoas, com fervorosas preces, em cumprimento d'um voto, ou por graças alcançadas.
At Fatima there have been most singular phenomena, of a higher order, independent of our will, imagination or reaction
Em Fatima tem havido fenomenos singularissimos, de ordem superior, independentes da nossa vontade, imaginação ou reacção
of human nervousness, and which science cannot explain. They were observed by many hundreds of people of every class. They must therefore not be forgotten, because of their great importance in determining the true nature of such manifestations.

On 13 May 1917, shortly after noon, at Fatima, three innocent country children without schooling were sitting beside a verdant holm oak.
No dia 13 de maio de 1917, pouco depois do meio dia, em Fatima, estavam assentadas tres inocentes creanças do campo e sem instrucção, junto d'uma viridente asinheira.
Suddenly they saw, among its branches, an Image of a Lady, who told them she was the Lady of the Rosary.
De repente viram, entre os seus ramos, uma Imagem de Senhora, que lhes disse ser a Senhora do Rosario.
She announced and promised to return again, to the same place and at the same hour, on the 13th days of the months from May (Conception) to October (Rosary). She further promised to give extraordinary and miraculous signs of her presence, on those days, to all those present.
Anunciou e prometeu voltar de novo, ao mesmo local e á mesma hora, nos dias 13 dos mezes de maio (Conceição), a Outubro (Rosario). Mais prometeu dar signaes extraordinarios e miraculosos da sua presença, n'esses dias, a todos os presentes.
There were 6 apparitions in all, including the first. She ordered the children to come back too, and to make other people go there to pray.
Eram ao todo 6 aparições incluindo a primeira. Ordenou ás creanças, que tambem voltassem e fizessem que ali fossem outras pessoas resar.
In confirmation of the truth of this first apparition, there is the extraordinary and astounding circumstance of two prophecies.
Em confirmação da veracidade d'esta primeira aparição, dá-se a circumstancia extraordinaria e pasmosa de duas prophecias.
1st She said that she would manifest herself again to the children on the days announced; 2nd That she would give extraordinary, superior, evident signs of her presence among the branches of the blessed holm oak.
1.º Disse que havia de voltar a manifestar-se ás creanças nos dias anunciados; 2.º Que daria signaes extraordinarios, superiores, evidentes de sua presença entre os ramos da asinheira abençoada.
On the days and at the hour previously designated by the apparition, the three children arrived punctually at the place. As soon as Jacintha, the eldest3, uttered the words: – Here she comes – there rose from the earth to Heaven, beside the small holm oak, a gentle cloud of smoke, like that of incense.
Nos dias e hora previamente designados pela aparição, chegavam pontualmente ao local as tres creanças. Logo que a Jacintha, a mais velha3, proferia as palavras: – Ela ahi vem – elevava-se da terra ao Ceu, junto da pequena asinheira, uma suave nuvem de fumo, similhante á do incenso.
This phenomenon was seen and observed distinctly, by attentive and circumspect persons, on all five days, at the moment the apparitions took place, at the hours previously fixed.
Este phenomeno foi visto e observado distinctamente, pelas pessoas atentas e circumspectas, todos os cinco dias, no momento de se realisarem as aparições, nas horas previamente marcadas.
On 13 August a great many people had already come from many parts of the country.
No dia 13 de agosto era já numerosissima a concorrencia de pessoas de muitos pontos do paiz.
The authorities, hoping to reduce the great crowds and to disappoint the believers, took the three children far away,
A autoridade, julgando reduzir o grande concurso e causar desilusões nas pessoas crentes, levou para longe as tres creanças,
falsely telling the parents that they would themselves take them to the little holm oak. Some time before the appointed, well-known moment, news reached the site that the children were being held by the authorities, who were saved only by the distance from receiving their just deserts on the spot.
declarando falsamente aos paes, que ela propria as conduziria á carrasqueira. Algum tempo antes do momento prefixo e conhecido, chegou ao local a noticia de que as creanças estavam detidas pela autoridade, valendo-lhe a distancia, para se não fazer logo a justiça devida.
To the confusion of the incredulous, the extraordinary manifestations were more evident in the month of August, in confirmation of the presence of the supernatural at Fatima, beside the verdant holm oak. At the precise moment a cloud of smoke arose, more intense, in the form of a most beautiful rosy crown, rising higher into the Sky three times.
Para confusão dos incredulos, as manifestações extraordinarias foram mais evidentes, no mez de agosto, em confirmação de presença do sobrenatural em Fatima, junto á viridente asinheira. No momento preciso, levantou-se uma nuvem de fumo, mais intensa, em forma de corôa rosada formosissima, subindo mais alto ao Ceu por trez vezes.
The apparition of this month was thus fully confirmed, despite the absence of the children.
Ficou assim plenamente confirmada a aparição d'este mez, a pesar da ausencia das creanças.
All the manifestations of the cloud of smoke at Fatima were fulfilled, which had been announced in advance by the children, according to the prophecy of the Virgin of the Rosary.
Completaram-se todas as manifestações da nuvem de fumo em Fatima, as quaes haviam sido, com antecedencia, anunciadas pelas creanças, segundo a prophecia da Virgem do Rosário.
To every apparition there always corresponded, beside the holm oak, the external manifestation of a cloud of smoke.
A todas as aparições, correspondeu sempre, junto da azinheira, a manifestação extrema d'uma nuvem de fumo.
It is, however, absolutely necessary to establish that there is no memory of any known phenomenon, meteorological or geological, having occurred at Fatima analogous to the manifestation of the cloud of smoke rising from the earth to Heaven beside the blessed little holm oak.
É porém de necessidade absoluta verificar que não ha memoria, de se ter dado em Fatima phenomeno algum conhecido, metheorologico ou geologico, analogo á manifestação da nuvem de fumo, subindo da terra ao Ceu, junto á carrasqueira de benção.
From the remotest times until 13 May 1917, when the first manifestation to the children took place, there is no memory of a similar phenomenon of the cloud of smoke having occurred at Fátima, nor even after the last memorable manifestation of 13 October. Likewise, in the period from 13 May to 13 October, there was nothing, except on the days designated in advance by the children.
Desde os tempos mais remotos até 13 de Maio de 1917, em que se deu a primeira manifestação ás creanças, não há memoria de se ter dado, em Fátima, phenomeno semelhante da nuvem de fumo, nem mesmo depois da ultima manifestação memoravel do dia 13 de outubro. Semelhantemente, no periodo de 13 de maio a 13 de outubro, nada houve, com excepção dos dias com antecedencia designados pelas creanças.
In the repeated and rigorous inquiries to which the innocent children, without any schooling, have been subjected, they declare firmly and without hesitation that it was the Virgin of the Rosary, ordering them to go often to pray the Rosary, and that everyone should take up this so blessed devotion.
Nos repetidos e rigorosos inqueritos a que teem sido sujeitas as inocentes creanças, sem instrucção alguma, declaram firmemente e sem hesitar que era a Virgem do Rosario, ordenando que eles fossem, muitas vezes, resar o Rosario, e que toda a gente concorresse a esta devoção tão abençoada.
To the announced apparitions there has always corresponded the prophetic fulfilment of the external manifestation of a cloud of smoke.
Ás aparições anunciadas tem correspondido sempre o cumprimento prophetico da manifestação externa d'uma nuvem de fumo.
This uniform coincidence, beside the foliage of the verdant holm oak, but only on the days previously announced and at the most exact hours, though it may seem of little importance, is an astounding phenomenon, of a higher order, from which no plausible explanation of a natural order can be deduced.
Esta uniforme coincidencia, junto á ramagem da viridente asinheira, mas sómente durante os dias previamente anunciados e horas certissimas, parecendo de pouca importância, é um phenomeno assombroso, de ordem superior, do qual não se deduz explicação alguma plausivel de ordem natural.
With my limited studies and knowledge I cannot unveil the mystery in the light of science, but only of divine reason. Even if the smoke were produced by an incomplete combustion, an evaporation or a chemical reaction, it is one over which the nervous system or human nervousness has no sway.
Com os meus limitados estudos e conhecimentos não sei desvendar o mysterio, á face da sciencia, mas tão sómente da razão divina. Seja embora a manifestação do fumo, produzida por uma combustão incompleta, uma evaporação ou reacção chimica, em que não tem imperio o systema nervoso ou nervosismo humano.
A few brief lines to clear up the doubts of some meticulous mind.
Breves linhas para elucidar duvidas d'algum espirito meticuloso.
On the ever memorable and extraordinary day of 13 October 1917, more than one hundred thousand people of all social categories and from many places in the country flocked to Fátima.
No dia sempre memoravel e extraordinario de 13 de outubro de 1917, concorreram a Fátima mais de cem mil pessoas de todas as categorias sociaes e de muitos logares do paiz.
Immediately after this apparition, the child Jacintha declared to many people that the Virgin of the Rosary had told her, regarding the European war, the following:
Logo depois d'esta aparição, a creança Jacintha declarou a muitas pessoas que a Virgem do Rosario lhe disséra, ácerca da guerra europeia, o seguinte:
– The war ended today.
– A guerra acabou hoje.
The word today does not, in classical Portuguese, mean only “twenty-four hours”. It is enough to recall the vernacular phrase of the best authors: – today there are some customs, tomorrow others.
A palavra hoje não designa, em portuguez classico, sómente “vinte e quatro horas”. Basta recordar a phrase vernacula dos melhores auctores: – hoje ha uns costumes, ámanhã outros.
With the leave of the Most Excellent Senhora Dona Magdalena Patricio, I mention her charming correspondence concerning Fátima, in which she rightly shows that the war ended exactly one year after 13 October 1917, taking the signing of the armistice as the end of the war.
Com venia da exma sra D. Magdalena Patricio, menciono a sua tão mimosa correspondencia relativamente a Fátima, na qual comprova, com verdade, haver a guerra terminado um ano certo depois de 13 de outubro de 1917, entendendo-se como fim da guerra a assignatura do armisticio.
It is all marvellous, and quite without natural explanation, what took place in the various phenomena manifested beside a simple holm-oak sapling.
É tudo maravilhoso e muito sem explicação natural o que se passou nos diversos phenomenos manifestados junto d'uma singela vergontea de asinheira.
