Deposition of the 4th witness

Depoimento da 4ª testemunha

Joaquim Inácio Vicente, married, stonemason, native and resident of the hamlet of Chainça, in Santa Catarina da Serra, of this diocese of Leiria, a thoroughly trustworthy man, declared to me that on the thirteenth of August, having left his work at the siesta hour at the parish church of this parish, where he was working, he went to the Cova da Iria; and that shortly after the hour given for the Apparitions, when the people were already disheartened and about to leave, he heard two loud detonations, like the bang of bombs or shots, coming from the direction of the holm-oak shrub, and at the same instant he sees the great mass of people fleeing. He fled too, thinking a serious brawl had broken out among the people; and, without knowing how or why, on turning back – for he was among those in front, being further from the holm-oak shrub – he sees the people, as if drawn by an electric current, running and gathering close to the holm-oak shrub.

For everyone who was there, this was an hour of terror. Some fainted; others thought this was the last day of their lives and that this was their Day of Judgement; and for some, afterwards, it was a marvel to see the wonderful colours that the clouds dimming the sun's rays took on one after another – bright red turning to pink, and then to blue – anise colour, as several people declared to me in my house a few minutes later.
