Joaquim Inácio Vicente, married, stonemason, native and resident of the hamlet of Chainça, in Santa Catarina da Serra, of this diocese of Leiria, a thoroughly trustworthy man, declared to me that on the thirteenth of August, having left his work at the siesta hour at the parish church of this parish, where he was working, he went to the Cova da Iria; and that shortly after the hour given for the Apparitions, when the people were already disheartened and about to leave, he heard two loud detonations, like the bang of bombs or shots, coming from the direction of the holm-oak shrub, and at the same instant he sees the great mass of people fleeing. He fled too, thinking a serious brawl had broken out among the people; and, without knowing how or why, on turning back – for he was among those in front, being further from the holm-oak shrub – he sees the people, as if drawn by an electric current, running and gathering close to the holm-oak shrub.
